Day-by-Day Itinerary
Days 1–2: Luang Prabang (arrive)
Fly into Luang Prabang. Two full days to explore the Unesco old quarter: Day 1 — Kuang Si Falls, Wat Xieng Thong, Mount Phousi sunset, night market. Day 2 — Dawn alms ceremony, Pak Ou Caves boat trip, afternoon cooking class. Stay in the old quarter for easy access.
Days 3–4: Nong Khiaw
Minivan to Nong Khiaw (3–4 hours). Two days of pure northern Laos beauty: Pha Tok viewpoint hike, bamboo bridge crossing, boat trip to remote Muang Ngoi village, swimming in the Nam Ou River, and epic stargazing at night. Stay in riverside bungalows.
Day 5: Luang Prabang (transit)

Days 6–7: Phonsavan & the Plain of Jars
Bus from Luang Prabang to Phonsavan (6–8 hours, $10–15). The Plain of Jars is one of Southeast Asia’s great archaeological mysteries — thousands of ancient stone jars scattered across the landscape, their purpose still unknown. Visit sites 1, 2, and 3, and learn about the Secret War at the UXO Visitor Centre. Overnight in Phonsavan. Pro tip: The MAG Visitor Centre provides sobering context about Laos being the most bombed country per capita in history.
Days 8–9: Vang Vieng
Bus from Phonsavan to Vang Vieng (5–6 hours, $8–12). Two days of adventure: hot air balloon at sunrise, kayaking the Nam Song River, Blue Lagoon 1, Tham Nam water cave tubing, and Nam Xay viewpoint hike for sunset.
Day 10: Vientiane
Train to Vientiane (1 hour). One day in the capital: Pha That Luang, Patuxai, Wat Si Saket, COPE Visitor Centre, and Mekong riverfront sunset. Overnight near the riverfront.
Days 11–14: Thakhek Motorbike Loop
Bus from Vientiane to Thakhek (6 hours, $8–12). Bus from Pakse to Nakasang (2 hours), boat to Don Det. Day 21: Departure

Thakhek Loop
The single greatest adventure in Laos. 450 km of pure riding through otherworldly karst landscapes. The Kong Lor Cave boat ride (7 km through a subterranean river) is one of the most awe-inspiring natural experiences in Southeast Asia.
Nong Khiaw Viewpoints
