Getting There & Getting Around Abu Dhabi

Arriving in Abu Dhabi

Fly into Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) – a modern, efficient hub served by Etihad Airways and many international carriers. Taxis and Careem/Uber are readily available (AED 60-120 to city centre). Many hotels offer complimentary airport transfers. If coming from Dubai, the drive is only 1.5 hours via the E11 highway.

Visa: Most nationalities receive a free 30-day visa on arrival (or 90 days for some). Apply online via the UAE ICA portal if needed. Have proof of onward travel and hotel booking ready.

Getting Around

Abu Dhabi is spread out. Use Careem or Uber (very reliable and affordable). Public buses serve the city centre well. For Yas Island and desert trips, rent a car for a day or book a private tour. Traffic is manageable outside rush hours (7-9 AM & 5-7 PM).

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Afternoon

Arrive, check into your hotel (recommended: Downtown or Corniche area), and head to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in the world. Completed in 2007, it features 82 white marble domes, over 1,000 columns inlaid with semi-precious stones, and the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet (5,627 m2).

Evening

Stay for the magical evening illumination. The mosque lights up in soft colours, creating stunning reflections in the surrounding pools.

Dinner suggestion: Try traditional Emirati dishes at Mezlai (Emirates Palace) or casual Lebanese at Al Fanar. Must-try: machboos, luqaimat, and Arabic coffee (qahwa).
Free entry. Women receive free abayas at the entrance. Best light for photography is 1 hour before sunset. Avoid prayer times (especially Friday noon). Guided tours are free and highly informative.

Day 2: Louvre Abu Dhabi & Saadiyat Island

Morning

Visit the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island. Designed by Jean Nouvel, its floating dome creates a rain of light effect. The collection brings together artworks from across civilisations.

Afternoon

Relax on Saadiyat Beach or stroll the waterfront. Visit Manarat Al Saadiyat for cultural exhibitions.

Evening

Sunset walk along the Corniche promenade with views of the modern skyline.

Book timed tickets online. Spend 2-3 hours. The dome is most spectacular when sunlight filters through in the afternoon. Combine with a mangrove kayak tour if you have energy.

Day 3: Arabian Desert Safari Adventure

Full Day

Full-day or overnight desert safari in the Rub al Khali (Empty Quarter). Activities include high-speed dune bashing, camel riding, sandboarding, falconry demonstrations, henna tattoos, belly dancing, and a traditional Bedouin dinner with live entertainment under the stars.

Choose a premium small-group tour (max 6-8 people) for comfort. Bring scarf/buff for sand protection. Overnight glamping adds magic with stargazing. Best Oct-Apr.

Day 4: Yas Island – Thrills, Racing & Entertainment

Full Day

Dedicated day on Yas Island. Visit Ferrari World (home of Formula Rossa – the world’s fastest roller coaster), Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World, or the Yas Marina Circuit. Perfect for families and thrill-seekers.

Buy a Yas Multi-Park ticket. Weekdays are quieter. Book Fast Track passes for popular rides if short on time.

Day 5: Corniche, Mangroves & Relaxed Departure

Morning

Relaxed morning on the Corniche or a peaceful mangrove kayak tour. Enjoy final beach time on Saadiyat Island before your flight.

Rent a bicycle on the Corniche in the early morning. Book a mangrove tour for wildlife spotting (crabs, birds, fish).
