A Beautiful Week Visiting the Munich Christmas Markets
Festive Cheer, Glühwein, and Holiday Magic
The crisp December air welcomed us as we stepped into Munich’s magical Christmas market season. The city transformed into a glowing winter wonderland, with twinkling lights, festive decorations, and the irresistible scent of roasted almonds and mulled wine filling the streets.
Our first stop was the famous market at **Marienplatz**, where a towering Christmas tree stood proudly in the centre, surrounded by beautifully decorated stalls. We warmed ourselves with mugs of spicy Glühwein and enjoyed hearty grilled bratwurst with mustard — the perfect introduction to Munich’s festive atmosphere.
Evenings were spent in the lively beer halls, especially the historic **Hofbräuhaus**, where we raised giant steins of Bavarian beer, listened to oompah bands, and feasted on enormous pretzels and succulent roast pork. The joyful atmosphere and traditional music made every visit feel like a celebration.
We also explored smaller, more intimate markets around the city. The Medieval Market at Wittelsbacher Platz transported us back in time with its rustic stalls and costumed vendors. We savoured roasted chestnuts, gingerbread, and mulled apple cider while browsing handcrafted ornaments and wooden toys.
A highlight was the creative **Tollwood Winter Festival** on the Theresienwiese (the same grounds as Oktoberfest). With its international food stalls, live performances, and artistic installations, it offered a more alternative and eclectic festive experience.
Our week in Munich during Christmas market season was pure magic. The combination of twinkling lights, delicious food and drink, and joyful holiday spirit created memories we’ll cherish for many years to come. Munich at Christmas is truly unforgettable.
