Discovering Delphi: A Journey Through Greece's Sacred History

Delphi, Greece

Our journey to Greece began with a chaotic taxi ride from our Bulgarian hostel. The taxi driver, evidently in a rush, sped through valleys and canyons at breakneck speeds. Each bump sent me flying out of my seat, causing my head to repeatedly hit the car’s roof. The driver’s battle with his malfunctioning car radio, which he kept ripping out of the dashboard and slamming against the steering wheel, added to the madness. By the time we reached the train station, I was immensely relieved to leave the taxi behind.

The train ride was an overnight journey, and we were fortunate to secure a private sleeper cabin. As expected, the 3 am border crossing was a noisy affair, with guards yelling and causing a commotion. We arrived in Thessaloniki at dawn and started our day with a delicious spanakopita. Afterward, we boarded another train to Larisa, where we switched to a bus bound for Lamia. On the final leg of our journey, the bus to Delphi, I overheard passengers marveling at what they thought was an ancient aqueduct, only to realize it was a modern concrete water channel. Despite the mix-up, after 23 hours of travel, we finally reached Delphi.

Our hotel in Delphi was a welcome change after weeks of traveling through developing countries. The fresh white sheets, fluffy towels, and delicious Greek food were a luxury we had sorely missed.

Delphi’s ancient site is steeped in mythology and history. According to legend, Zeus sought to find the center of his “Grandmother Earth” and determined Delphi to be that sacred spot. It became the location of a major temple dedicated to Phoebus Apollo, the Pythian Games, and the renowned prehistoric oracle. Even during Roman times, hundreds of statues adorned the area. Perched high in the mountains, Delphi offers stunning views of the Gulf of Corinth and is a destination well worth visiting.

The Delphi Archaeological Museum houses a remarkable collection of artifacts, offering a glimpse into the region’s storied past. Visitors can marvel at the Charioteer of Delphi, the Sphinx of Naxos, and other treasures that highlight the rich history of this ancient site.

Walking through Delphi, one can’t help but feel the serene and mystical atmosphere that pervades the area. The panoramic views of the surrounding valley and olive groves add to the site’s timeless allure.
