Caucasus Mountains Azerbaijan: 6-Day Mountain Adventure Itinerary 2026

Explore the dramatic landscapes, ancient villages, and warm hospitality of the Greater Caucasus Mountains in northern Azerbaijan. This detailed 6-day itinerary is suitable for both independent travellers and those using public transport.

How to Get There & Get Around the Caucasus Mountains

From Baku to Quba / Qusar (Gateway):

  • Bus: Regular buses from Baku International Bus Station (4–5 hours, €6–8)
  • Shared Taxi / Minibus: Faster (3–3.5 hours, €10–15 per person)
  • Private Transfer: €60–80 for a comfortable car (recommended for groups)

Within the Mountains:

  • Laza Village: Shared 4×4 from Qusar (€10–15 per person, 1 hour)
  • Khinalug: Only accessible by 4×4. Shared jeeps from Quba/Qusar (€20–30 per person one way). The road is steep, narrow, and dramatic.
  • Shahdag National Park: Regular shuttles from Qusar or private taxi.

Best Option: Rent a car with high clearance in Baku, or hire a local driver/guide for the mountain section (€80–120 per day including fuel).

Important: Mountain roads are winding. Avoid driving at night. In winter (Nov–Mar), many roads require snow chains or may be closed.

Day 1-2: Quba & Qusar – Gateway to the Mountains

Quba and Qusar are the main entry points to the Azerbaijani Caucasus. Quba is famous for its apple orchards and charming 19th-century architecture, while Qusar serves as the practical base for heading higher into the mountains.

History: The region was once part of the powerful Quba Khanate and later became a popular summer retreat during the Russian Empire era.

Top Sights: Quba’s historic centre, Nizami Park, Afurja Waterfall, and the scenic road toward Laza.

Where to Stay: Comfortable homestays in Qusar or mountain-style guesthouses (€30–55/night with excellent home-cooked meals).

Where to Eat: Local cafés serving Quba apples, fresh river trout, dolma, and mountain honey with strong black tea.

Day 3-4: Shahdag National Park & Laza Village

Shahdag National Park is a paradise for nature lovers. Laza is a beautiful highland village surrounded by steep cliffs and waterfalls.

Top Sights: Laza Waterfall, Shahdag cable car, alpine meadows, and multi-day trekking routes.

Where to Stay: Authentic homestays in Laza (€35–70/night). Many include dinner and breakfast.

Where to Eat: Guesthouse meals with fresh local ingredients — highly recommended.

Day 5: Khinalug (Xınalıq) – One of the Highest Villages in the World

Khinalug sits at 2,350m and is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited villages on Earth. The village has its own language and unique cultural traditions.

Top Sights: Ancient stone houses, village mosque, and panoramic mountain views.

Where to Stay: Homestays inside the village (€40–75/night) — an unforgettable cultural experience.

Safety & Dangers in the Caucasus Mountains

The Azerbaijani side of the Caucasus is generally safe for tourists, but mountain travel requires preparation.

  • Narrow, winding mountain roads — drive cautiously or hire a local driver
  • Altitude sickness risk in Khinalug and Shahdag
  • Limited phone signal in remote areas — download offline maps
  • Avoid the border areas with Armenia
