5 Days in Laos: Northern Highlights Itinerary

Five days is the sweet spot for a first taste of Laos. This 5-day Laos itinerary covers the three essential destinations of the north — starting in the laid-back capital Vientiane, winding through the dramatic karst landscapes of Vang Vieng, and finishing in Unesco-listed Luang Prabang. The new high-speed railway makes this route faster and smoother than ever, leaving more time for temples, waterfalls, and river sunsets.

5-Day Laos Itinerary Overview

Route: Vientiane → Vang Vieng → Luang Prabang

Best for: First-time visitors, long weekends, adding Laos to a Thailand-Vietnam loop

Budget: $130–200 (budget) or $250–400 (mid-range) excluding flights

Transport: High-speed train between all three cities — quick, comfortable, and scenic

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Vientiane — Capital Charm

Morning: Arrive at Wattay International Airport or Vientiane Railway Station. Check into your accommodation near the Mekong riverfront — this is the most walkable area for sightseeing.

Late morning: Walk to Wat Si Saket, the oldest surviving temple in Vientiane (built 1818). Its cloister walls hold thousands of Buddha images in tiny niches. Cross the street to Haw Phra Kaew, the former home of the Emerald Buddha, now a religious art museum.

Lunch: Eat at a local restaurant near the Namphu Circle. Try laap (minced meat salad with lime and herbs) and sticky rice — about $3.

Afternoon: Visit Pha That Luang — the great golden stupa that is the national symbol of Laos. Then walk to Patuxai Victory Monument and climb to the top for panoramic city views.

Evening: Stroll along the Mekong River promenade at sunset. Browse the Vientiane Night Market for souvenirs and eat grilled Mekong river fish at the food stalls — about $2–4.

  • Accommodation: Lao Poet Hotel (mid-range) or Patuxay Hostel (budget) near the riverfront
  • Estimated spend: $25–40

Day 2: Vientiane to Vang Vieng

Morning: Take the early high-speed train from Vientiane to Vang Vieng — just over 1 hour, $5–8 for second class. The journey through rural Laos is scenic and comfortable.

Arrive Vang Vieng: Take a shared tuk-tuk from the station into town ($2–3). Drop your bags and rent a scooter ($8–12/day) for maximum freedom.

Afternoon: Ride to Blue Lagoon 1 and Tham Phu Kham Cave (8 km from town). Swim in the turquoise waters, swing from the rope into the deep pool, and explore the cave with its reclining Buddha. Visit Blue Lagoon 2 or 3 on the way back for a quieter swim.

Late afternoon: Hike up to Nam Xay Viewpoint (20-minute steep climb) for a panoramic view of Vang Vieng’s dramatic karst landscape. The iconic motorbike-on-the-summit photo spot is here.

Evening: Dinner at a riverside restaurant in town — try the local speciality of sin savanh (grilled Lao beef jerky) with sticky rice and jaew bong (chilli paste). Cold Beerlao, naturally. About $4–7.

  • Accommodation: The Elephant Adventure Hotel (mid-range) or Nana Backpackers (budget)
  • Estimated spend: $30–50

Day 3: Vang Vieng Adventure & Train to Luang Prabang

Morning: Half-day kayaking on the Nam Song River ($15–25). Paddle through dramatic karst scenery, past rice paddies and water buffalo, with swim stops in calm sections. Most trips finish around midday.

Lunch: Grab a quick bowl of khao piak sen (Lao chicken noodle soup) at a market stall — about $1.50.

Early afternoon: Take the high-speed train from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang (1.5 hours, $10–12 second class). The train weaves through mountains and over bridges — one of the most scenic rail journeys in Southeast Asia.

Arrive Luang Prabang: Check into your guesthouse in the Unesco old quarter. Take a gentle evening walk along the Mekong riverbank as the sun sets.

Evening: Explore the Luang Prabang Night Market — buy handmade textiles, try local snacks, and soak in the relaxed atmosphere.

  • Accommodation: The Sene Hostel (budget) or Villa Santi (mid-range) in the old quarter
  • Estimated spend: $35–55

Day 4: Luang Prabang — Kuang Si Falls & Temples

Pre-dawn (5:30 AM): Witness the Tak Bat alms ceremony. Find a respectful spot on Sakkaline Road and watch the silent procession of monks collecting sticky rice offerings.

Morning: Hire a tuk-tuk to Kuang Si Falls (29 km, $3–5 shared). Arrive at 8:00 AM to beat the crowds. Swim in the milky-turquoise pools, hike to the top of the multi-tiered waterfall, and visit the sun bear sanctuary at the entrance.

Lunch: Simple Lao food at the stalls near the falls — grilled meat, sticky rice, fresh fruit shake — about $2–4.

Afternoon: Visit Wat Xieng Thong — the most beautiful and important temple in Luang Prabang. Don’t miss the Tree of Life mosaic and the ornate funeral chapel.

Sunset: Climb Mount Phousi (328 steps) for sunset over the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. The golden stupa at the summit glows in the evening light.

Evening: Dinner at a local restaurant — treat yourself to a full Lao spread of laap, tam mak hoong, sticky rice, and grilled river fish for $4–7.

  • Estimated spend: $25–40

Day 5: Pak Ou Caves & Departure

Morning: Take a long-tail boat from the boat landing for a Mekong River cruise to the Pak Ou Caves (25 km north, about 2 hours round-trip). Explore the two cave chambers filled with thousands of Buddha statues — some centuries old, others left by modern pilgrims.

Stop en route: Visit Ban Xang Hai (Whisky Village) to sample traditional Lao-Lao rice whisky.

Lunch: Final Lao meal in town — enjoy a bowl of spicy kaeng jeut (clear vegetable soup with pork) at a local eatery.

Afternoon: Last shopping at the morning market (Talat Phosy) for Lao coffee and silk. Head to Luang Prabang Airport for departure — it’s a quick 15-minute ride from the old quarter.

  • Estimated spend: $15–30
  • Departure: Luang Prabang Airport (LPQ) — direct flights to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hanoi, and Siem Reap
