Day-by-Day Itinerary
Days 1–2: Luang Prabang (arrive)
Fly into Luang Prabang. Two full days to explore the Unesco old quarter: Day 1 — Kuang Si Falls, Wat Xieng Thong, Mount Phousi sunset, night market. Day 2 — Dawn alms ceremony, Pak Ou Caves boat trip, afternoon cooking class. Stay in the old quarter for easy access.
Days 3–4: Nong Khiaw
Minivan to Nong Khiaw (3–4 hours). Two days of pure northern Laos beauty: Pha Tok viewpoint hike, bamboo bridge crossing, boat trip to remote Muang Ngoi village, swimming in the Nam Ou River, and epic stargazing at night. Stay in riverside bungalows.
Day 5: Luang Prabang (transit)
Minivan back to Luang Prabang. Relaxed day — revisit favourite spots, shop for souvenirs at the morning market, or take a riverside yoga class.
Days 6–7: Phonsavan & the Plain of Jars
Bus from Luang Prabang to Phonsavan (6–8 hours, $10–15). The Plain of Jars is one of Southeast Asia’s great archaeological mysteries — thousands of ancient stone jars scattered across the landscape, their purpose still unknown. Visit sites 1, 2, and 3, and learn about the Secret War at the UXO Visitor Centre. Overnight in Phonsavan. Pro tip: The MAG Visitor Centre provides sobering context about Laos being the most bombed country per capita in history.
Days 8–9: Vang Vieng
Bus from Phonsavan to Vang Vieng (5–6 hours, $8–12). Two days of adventure: hot air balloon at sunrise, kayaking the Nam Song River, Blue Lagoon 1, Tham Nam water cave tubing, and Nam Xay viewpoint hike for sunset.
Day 10: Vientiane
Train to Vientiane (1 hour). One day in the capital: Pha That Luang, Patuxai, Wat Si Saket, COPE Visitor Centre, and Mekong riverfront sunset. Overnight near the riverfront.
Days 11–14: Thakhek Motorbike Loop
Bus from Vientiane to Thakhek (6 hours, $8–12). The Thakhek Loop is one of Asia’s greatest motorbike adventures — a 450 km circuit through spectacular karst landscapes, massive caves, waterfalls, and remote villages. Rent a motorcycle in Thakhek ($10–15/day). Route: Thakhek → Kong Lor Cave (overnight at cave village 1) → Lak Sao → Thalang → Thakhek (day 4). The 7 km boat ride through Kong Lor Cave is the highlight — a subterranean river through a cavern so vast it feels otherworldly.
Days 15–17: Pakse & Bolaven Plateau
Bus from Thakhek to Pakse (4–5 hours, $6–10). Three days on the Bolaven Plateau: rent a motorbike and do the 2-day Bolaven Loop — Tad Fane, Tad Yuang, and Tad Champee waterfalls, coffee plantation visits, and overnight at a hill-tribe village homestay. Day 3: visit Wat Phu Champasak, a Unesco-listed Khmer temple complex predating Angkor Wat.
Days 18–20: Si Phan Don (4000 Islands)
Bus from Pakse to Nakasang (2 hours), boat to Don Det. Three days of complete relaxation: cycle around car-free islands, spot Irrawaddy dolphins at Don Khone, visit Khone Phapheng Falls (largest waterfall by volume in Southeast Asia), and do absolutely nothing in a hammock. This is your reward for three weeks on the road.
Day 21: Departure
Boat to Nakasang, bus to Pakse (2 hours). Fly from Pakse International Airport to Bangkok, Vientiane, or connect to Luang Prabang. Alternatively, cross the border into Cambodia at Veun Kham (30 minutes from the islands) to continue your Southeast Asia overland adventure.
Must-Do Experiences Not to Miss
Thakhek Loop
The single greatest adventure in Laos. 450 km of pure riding through otherworldly karst landscapes. The Kong Lor Cave boat ride (7 km through a subterranean river) is one of the most awe-inspiring natural experiences in Southeast Asia.
Nong Khiaw Viewpoints
Pha Tok viewpoint offers one of the most stunning panoramic views in all of Laos. The hike is steep but short (1 hour), and the sight of the Nam Ou River winding between towering karst mountains is unforgettable.
Plain of Jars
One of archaeology’s greatest unsolved mysteries. Hundreds of stone jars up to 3 metres tall, scattered across the Xieng Khouang plateau, their purpose still unknown after 2,000 years. A fascinating and off-the-beaten-path destination.
Bolaven Loop Waterfalls
Some of the most spectacular waterfalls in Southeast Asia — Tad Fane (120m twin cascade), Tad Yuang, and Tad Champee. Combined with coffee plantations and ethnic minority villages, the Bolaven Loop is a highlight of southern Laos.

Essential Tips for a Long Laos Trip
- Visa: Most nationalities get 30 days on arrival ($30–40 USD). Extendable once for another 30 days at immigration offices in major cities.
- Cash is king: ATMs are available in all towns but charge 20,000 LAK fee. Withdraw larger amounts to minimise fees.
- Pack light: You’ll be moving between many destinations — a 40L backpack is sufficient for three weeks.
- Download offline maps: Google Maps offline and Maps.me are essential, especially for the Thakhek Loop and Bolaven Plateau.
- Health: No compulsory vaccinations but Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus are recommended. Tap water is not drinkable.
- Stay flexible: Bus schedules change, roads flood, plans evolve — go with it. That’s the Lao way.
