The Nomad’s Trail: One Month Across the Last Frontier

A full month in Mongolia allows you to experience the country in its entirety — every major region, every iconic landscape, and every cultural highlight. This overland journey takes you on a loop that starts in Ulaanbaatar, heads east to Chinggis Khaan’s homeland, south to the Gobi, west to the Altai, north to Khövsgöl Lake, and back to UB. By the end, you will have travelled thousands of kilometres across the most diverse landscapes on the Eurasian steppe, learned about nomadic culture from the families who live it, and experienced the true spirit of Mongolia. Estimated budget: $3500–5500.

Itinerary Overview

Days 1–3: Ulaanbaatar Deep Culture Immersion

Three full days to properly explore Mongolia’s capital. Visit all major museums — the National Museum, the Fine Arts Museum (housing Zanabazar’s masterpieces), the Choijin Lama Temple, and the Bogd Khaan Winter Palace. Take a Mongolian cooking class, visit the cashmere factories, explore the Black Market, and enjoy the city’s growing craft beer scene. Also arrange permits and finalise your overland itinerary.

Days 4–8: Eastern Mongolia Expedition

Head east from Ulaanbaatar into Khentii Province (5 days). Visit Chinggis Khaan’s birthplace near Dadal, the sacred Burkhan Khaldun mountain (viewpoints), hike through the Khentii Mountains, fish for Taimen on the Onon River, explore the Balj River Valley’s dramatic rock formations, and continue into Dornod Province for the vast, untouched steppe. Stay in remote ger camps and with nomadic families.

Days 9–12: Hustai, Terelj & Orkhon Valley

Return from Eastern Mongolia via Hustai National Park (Takhi wild horses), then spend time in Terelj National Park (horseback riding, hiking). Continue to the Orkhon Valley for three days exploring Erdene Zuu, Karakorum, Orkhon Waterfall, and Tuvkhun Hermitage. Deep cultural immersion with nomadic families.

Days 13–18: Gobi Desert Full Circuit

Fly from UB to Dalanzadgad or drive south. Six days exploring the entire Gobi: Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs, Khongoryn Els Singing Dunes (climb and camel trek), Yolyn Am ice canyon, Khermen Tsav (stunning canyon), Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa), the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park, and the Gobi Museum in Dalanzadgad. Multiple nights under the stars in different desert ger camps.

Days 19–23: Khövsgöl Lake

Travel from the Gobi to northern Mongolia. Five days at Khövsgöl Lake: multi-day horse trekking along the spectacular 164 km shoreline, kayaking on the pristine turquoise lake, hiking through dense taiga forest, visiting the Tsaatan reindeer herders in the remote northern taiga (a bucket-list experience), and relaxing by the lakeside at Khatgal village.

Days 24–28: Altai & Western Mongolia

Fly from Moron to Ölgii. Five days in the Altai region: stay with a Kazakh eagle hunter family, watch eagle hunting demonstrations, explore Altai Tavan Bogd National Park (5 sacred peaks, Potanin Glacier), visit ancient petroglyph sites at Tsagaan Salaa (UNESCO World Heritage), and do high-altitude horse trekking through alpine valleys. Cultural immersion with the Kazakh minority culture.

Days 29–30: Return to UB & Departure

Return to Ulaanbaatar via flight from Ölgii. Your final day and a half: cashmere shopping at Gobi Cashmere and Mary & Martha, souvenir hunting at the State Department Store and Black Market, a farewell Mongolian BBQ dinner, and departure from Chinggis Khaan International Airport.
