Bangkok to Everything: The Full Immersion

A month in Thailand. Not a whistle-stop tour — a full immersion. This itinerary takes you from the neon chaos of Bangkok to the silent ancient ruins of Ayutthaya, from the misty mountains of Chiang Mai and Pai to the surreal white temples of Chiang Rai, from the sandy coves of Koh Samui to the coral gardens of Koh Tao and the full-moon shores of Koh Phangan, and finishes on the dramatic Andaman coast — Krabi’s karsts, Phuket’s beaches, and Phi Phi’s turquoise lagoons. Four weeks is enough time to stop being a tourist and start being a traveller. Estimate budget: €1500–2200.

30-Day Itinerary Overview

Route: Bangkok + Ayutthaya (Week 1) → Chiang Mai + Pai + Chiang Rai (Week 2) → Koh Samui + Koh Tao + Koh Phangan (Week 3) → Krabi + Railay + Phuket + Phi Phi (Week 4) → Bangkok departure

Best for: Long-term travellers, digital nomads, sabbatical-goers, anyone wanting comprehensive Thailand in one trip

Budget: €1,500–2,200 per person (excluding international flights)

Direction: East → North → Gulf Islands → Andaman Coast → return to Bangkok

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Week 1: Bangkok & Ayutthaya

Days 1–3 Bangkok: Arrival, river orientation, Grand Palace + Wat Pho + Wat Arun. Explore Chinatown and the Thonburi canals. Take a longtail boat through the klongs. Night market at Yaowarat Road. Sample Bangkok’s legendary street food scene — from Michelin-starred Jay Fai to 50-baht pad Thai on a street corner.

Days 4–5 Ayutthaya: Day trip by train to the ancient capital. Cycle through the Historical Park. Visit Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Si Sanphet, and Wat Ratchaburana. Optional overnight in Ayutthaya for sunrise at the ruins — quieter, cooler, and magical.

Days 6–7 Bangkok side trips: Visit the market at Damnoen Saduak (floating market) or Maeklong Railway Market where a train passes through the stalls. Evening market cooking class. Night train to Chiang Mai on Day 7.

Accommodation Week 1: Banglamphu guesthouse (€10–25/night), one night Ayutthaya guesthouse optional (€10–15).

Week 1 budget: €250–350 (floating market extra).

Pro Tip: Stay near BTS Saphan Taksin for easy river access, or in Banglamphu for the backpacker vibe. The orange-flag boat is your best €0.40 transport investment.

Week 2: Chiang Mai, Pai & Chiang Rai

Days 8–10 Chiang Mai: Arrive by overnight train. Explore the Old City temples at a relaxed pace. Doi Suthep at sunrise. Half-day cooking class. Ethical elephant sanctuary day trip. Walk the Sunday Walking Street if the timing is right. Eat khao soi every day — you won’t get tired of it.

Days 11–12 Pai: Minibus over the legendary 762 curves. Rent a scooter and explore Pai Canyon at sunrise, Pam Bok Waterfall, Sai Ngam Hot Springs, and the Pai Walking Street market. Stay in a riverside bamboo bungalow and let Pai’s bohemian rhythm slow you down.

Day 13 Chiang Rai: Return from Pai to Chiang Mai, then continue to Chiang Rai (or hire a car for the full loop). Visit the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), the Blue Temple, and the Golden Triangle. Stay overnight in Chiang Rai.

Day 14 Fly south: Morning at the Black House Museum (Baan Dam). Fly from Chiang Rai to Koh Samui via Bangkok (one stop).

Accommodation Week 2: Chiang Mai guesthouse (€10–20/night), Pai bungalow (€8–15/night), Chiang Rai guesthouse (€10–15/night).

Week 2 budget: €280–400 (including elephant sanctuary and flights).

Pro Tip: If you’re tight on time, skip the return to Chiang Mai and do a Chiang Mai → Pai → Chiang Rai loop — book a private driver or join a multi-day tour that covers all three.

Week 3: Koh Samui, Koh Tao & Koh Phangan

Days 15–17 Koh Samui: Arrive from Chiang Rai. Island exploration — Big Buddha, Na Muang waterfalls, Fisherman’s Village. Beach time at Lamai or Chaweng. Sunset at Bang Po on the west coast. Ang Thong Marine Park day trip — kayaking through the 42-island archipelago.

Day 18 Koh Tao: Ferry from Samui to Koh Tao (1.5 hours). Snorkel at Shark Bay, Ao Leuk, and Mango Bay. If you’re a diver, this is the best place in Thailand to get certified — one of the cheapest Open Water courses in the world (around €250).

Days 19–20 Koh Phangan: Ferry from Koh Tao to Koh Phangan. Explore the island on a scooter — Thong Nai Pan Yai beach, Bottle Beach (accessible only by boat), and the Than Sadet waterfall. If it’s the week of the full moon, the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin is a rite of passage. If it’s not, Koh Phangan is quieter, wilder, and more beautiful than its party reputation suggests.

Day 21: Ferry back to Koh Samui for a final evening on the island.

Accommodation Week 3: Samui (€12–25/night), Koh Tao bungalow (€12–20/night), Koh Phangan (€10–20/night).

Week 3 budget: €320–480 (includes dive/snorkel, Ang Thong tour, ferries).

Pro Tip: The Lomprayah high-speed catamaran connects Samui ↔ Tao ↔ Phangan in about 1.5–2 hours per leg. Book a “three-island ticket” for a small discount if doing all three.

Week 4: Krabi, Railay, Phuket & Koh Phi Phi

Days 22–23 Krabi & Railay: Ferry from Samui to Surat Thani, then bus to Krabi. Transfer to Railay Beach. Rock climbing on the karst cliffs. Hike to the hidden lagoon. Kayak through the mangroves at sunset. Four Island tour to Poda, Chicken, Tup, and Phra Nang.

Days 24–26 Phuket: Transfer from Krabi to Phuket via bus and ferry. Explore the west coast beaches — Kata, Karon, and Nai Harn. Big Buddha mountain temple. Phuket Old Town for the Sino-Portuguese architecture and heritage dining. Day trip to Phang Nga Bay for sea canoeing around the limestone karsts and James Bond Island. Sunset at Promthep Cape.

Days 27–28 Koh Phi Phi: Speedboat or ferry from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi Don. Snorkel at Maya Bay, Loh Samah, Bamboo Island. Hike to the viewpoint for the famous twin-bay panorama. Night at Phi Phi — fire shows on the beach, beachfront bars, and the nocturnal energy of the island.

Days 29–30 Return to Bangkok & Departure: Ferry back to Phuket, flight to Bangkok. One last night in the city. Visit Wat Saket for a final Bangkok panorama. Farewell dinner on the Chao Phraya River. Fly out the next morning.

Accommodation Week 4: Railay bungalow (€15–25/night), Phuket guesthouse (€12–25/night), Phi Phi bungalow (€15–25/night), Bangkok final night (€15–25).

Week 4 budget: €400–600 (includes Phang Nga Bay tour, Phi Phi, flights).

Pro Tip: After a month of travel, you’ll be tired but full. Build a buffer day into Week 4 — skip one minor activity and just sit on a beach. Your feet will thank you.
