Singapore on a Budget: How to Spend S$50/Day in the World’s Most Expensive City
Everyone says Singapore is expensive. And sure — if you’re dining at Marina Bay Sands and shopping on Orchard Road, it will cost you. But here’s the secret the guidebooks don’t tell you: the real Singapore runs on S$5 meals, S$1.50 MRT rides, and free gardens that rival anything you’d pay for. This is how to spend a day in Singapore without spending a fortune.
The S$50/Day Budget Breakdown
Here’s exactly where every dollar goes on a S$50/day budget — realistic, tested, and sustainable:
Daily Budget (S$50 / ~€31):
- Accommodation (hostel dorm): S$25-35
- Breakfast (kopi + kaya toast): S$3-5
- Lunch (hawker centre): S$4-6
- Dinner (hawker centre): S$5-7
- Snack/drink (ice kacang, sugar cane juice): S$2-4
- Transport (MRT + walking): S$3-6
- Attraction (free or paid): S$0-20
- Total: S$42-63
On S$50/day you eat incredibly well (hawker food is world-class), sleep in a clean central hostel, use the excellent MRT, and see the city’s best attractions — many of which are free.
Free & Almost-Free Attractions
Gardens by the Bay (Outdoor Gardens)
The outdoor supertree grove and surrounding gardens are completely free. Come at sunset when the supertrees light up for the free Garden Rhapsody light-and-sound show (daily at 7:45pm and 8:45pm). The paid conservatories (S$20-28) are spectacular but optional.
Marina Bay Waterfront Promenade
The best free view in Singapore. Walk from the Esplanade around Marina Bay to the Helix Bridge. The skyline at night is breathtaking. The Merlion Park is on the way. Allow 1-2 hours for a leisurely stroll.
Chinatown, Little India & Kampong Glam
Three distinct cultural neighbourhoods, all free to explore. Chinatown’s temples and hawker centres. Little India’s colourful streets and spice shops. Kampong Glam’s Arab Street and Sultan Mosque. Each neighbourhood is walkable and packed with photo opportunities.
Singapore Botanic Gardens
A UNESCO World Heritage site and completely free (except the National Orchid Garden which costs S$5). The gardens are beautiful, well-maintained, and a peaceful escape from the city. Open 5am to midnight daily.
Accommodation on a Budget
Accommodation is the biggest cost in Singapore. Here’s the range:
- Hostel dorm bed: S$25-45/night. Look in Chinatown, Little India, or Bugis for the best value. Many hostels have excellent common areas, free breakfast, and clean pod-style beds.
- Budget guesthouse (private room): S$60-110/night. Think basic but clean. Found in Little India and Geylang. Shared bathroom usually.
- Capsule hotel: S$40-60/night. Japanese-style pods, surprisingly comfortable. Good option between hostel and guesthouse.
Transport: The MRT Is Your Best Friend
Singapore’s MRT is one of the best metro systems in the world — clean, efficient, air-conditioned, and affordable. You don’t need taxis or ride-sharing.
- Single ride: S$1.20-2.80 depending on distance
- Day pass (Singapore Tourist Pass): S$22 for 1 day of unlimited rides
- EZ-Link card: S$10 (S$5 non-refundable card fee + S$5 credit). Cheaper than single tickets on every ride.
- Walking: Singapore is surprisingly walkable. The city centre (Marina Bay, Chinatown, Clarke Quay) is all within 30 minutes on foot.
Budget transport tip: Use the EZ-Link card and walk between nearby attractions. A day of MRT plus walking costs around S$4-6.

Money-Saving Tips
- Always eat at hawker centres. A meal at a hawker centre costs S$4-8. The same dish at a shopping mall food court costs S$8-12. At a restaurant, S$15-25+.
- Bring a reusable water bottle. Tap water in Singapore is perfectly safe to drink. Fill up at any public sink or water cooler.
- Skip Sentosa. The Universal Studios, beaches, and resorts are expensive and generic. The real Singapore doesn’t cost a cent to explore.
- Use the public pools. Singapore has many excellent public swimming pools (S$1-3 entry) — a cheap way to cool off.
- Book accommodation with a kitchen. Even a hostel with a pantry lets you make breakfast and pack lunch. Saves S$5-10/day.
- Happy hour is your friend. Draft beer at hawker centres: S$5-7. At a bar: S$12-18. Stick to hawker centres and 7-Eleven for drinks.
