Budapest to Lake Balaton: The Hungarian Sea, Lavender & Volcanic Wines — 7-Day Itinerary

With a full week in Hungary, you can experience both the electric energy of Budapest and the serene beauty of Lake Balaton — Europe’s largest lake and Hungary’s favourite summer escape. This itinerary gives you three days to explore Budapest’s thermal baths, castle district, and ruin bars, then four days to unwind around Balaton: hiking the lavender-scented Tihany Peninsula, tasting rare volcanic whites on Badacsony Hill, swimming in the world’s largest thermal lake at Hévíz, and cycling through vineyard-covered hills. The transition from capital city to lakeside village is only 90 minutes by train, but it feels like entering a completely different country. Estimated budget: €370–580 per person excluding accommodation.

7-Day Itinerary Overview

Route: Budapest (3 nights) → Balatonfüred/Tihany (2 nights) → Badacsony region (1 night) → Budapest departure

Best for: First-time visitors wanting city + nature, slow travellers, wine and spa lovers

Budget: €370–580 per person (excluding accommodation)

Direction: Loop from Budapest — train to Balaton, ferry between lakeside towns, return to Budapest

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Budapest Arrival — Pest & Ruin Bars

Arrive in Budapest and check into your Pest accommodation. Afternoon orientation walk: Andrássy Avenue to Heroes’ Square, then through City Park past Vajdahunyad Castle. Evening: dinner and ruin bar crawl in the Jewish Quarter — Szimpla Kert, Instant, Mazel Tov, and Kőleves are within walking distance of each other.

Accommodation: Pest, District V-VII (3 nights). Bus €15–65/night.

Entry costs: Heroes’ Square free.

Pro Tip: Buy a 72-hour Budapest transport pass on Day 1 (€15) — it covers all your Budapest days and the airport shuttle zone.

Day 2: Buda Castle, Parliament & Széchenyi Baths

Morning: cross the Chain Bridge to Buda for the Castle District — Matthias Church, Fisherman’s Bastion, and the hilltop views over Pest. Midday: Parliament Building guided tour (book ahead). Afternoon: Széchenyi Thermal Bath for a classic Budapest soak. Evening: Danube sunset cruise — skip the expensive dinner cruise, just do the 1-hour sightseeing version.

Entry costs: Parliament tour €13, Matthias Church €5, Széchenyi Baths €18–22, Danube cruise €12–20.

Pro Tip: Book the Parliament tour online at least 3 days ahead. The 9:30 AM English tour lets you finish by 11 and move on to Fisherman’s Bastion.

Day 3: Great Market Hall, Gellért Hill & Budapest Food

Morning: Great Market Hall for souvenirs, paprika shopping, and lángos. Walk along the Danube promenade to the Shoes on the Danube memorial. Afternoon: hike up Gellért Hill (30 min) for panoramic city views and the Liberty Statue. Late afternoon: explore the Jewish Quarter’s hidden street art and vintage shops. Evening: farewell Budapest dinner at a traditional étterem — try the chicken paprikash or goulash.

Entry costs: Market Hall free, Gellért Hill free.

Dinner: Traditional Hungarian restaurant €8–15.

Pro Tip: Gellért Hill at sunset is the best free experience in Budapest. The view of the Parliament Building lighting up across the river is unforgettable.

Day 4: Budapest to Tihany — Lavender & Abbey Views

Morning train from Budapest Déli Station to Balatonfüred (2h, €7–10). Take a taxi or bus to Tihany Peninsula (10 min). Check into your accommodation. Afternoon: explore the Tihany Abbey and its panoramic terrace overlooking the entire lake, then walk down through the lavender fields (June-July bloom). Take the ferry from Tihany across the lake (€2–3) for a different perspective, then return for a relaxed dinner at a lakeside restaurant.

Transport: Train €7–10, local bus €1–2, ferry €2–3.

Accommodation: Tihany or Balatonfüred. Guesthouse €25–45/night.

Pro Tip: Stay in Tihany village itself rather than Balatonfüred — quieter, more authentic, and you wake up to the abbey view.

Day 5: Balatonfüred to Badacsony — Wine & Cycling

Rent a bike (€8–15/day) in Balatonfüred and cycle the scenic northern shore trail to Badacsony — about 35 km of stunning lake views, gentle hills, and vineyard stops. The trail passes Csopak beach (good for a swim break) and takes 3-4 hours at a leisurely pace. Arrive in Badacsony, check into your accommodation, and spend the afternoon wine tasting on the hillside terraces of the volcanic Badacsony mountain. Laposa Bistro has the best view on the lake.

Bike rental: €8–15/day, available in Balatonfüred.

Wine tasting: €5–8 per cellar for 4-6 wines.

Accommodation: Badacsony village. Guesthouse €25–40/night.

Pro Tip: If cycling isn’t your thing, take the train from Balatonfüred to Badacsonytomaj (30 min, €2–3) and walk up to the wine terraces.

Day 6: Hévíz Thermal Lake & Keszthely Palace

Morning bus from Badacsony to Hévíz (40 min). Spend 2-3 hours at the world’s largest natural thermal lake — float in 33-36°C mineral-rich water surrounded by red water lilies (a unique subspecies found only here). Lunch in Hévíz, then take a short bus to Keszthely (10 min) for the afternoon. Explore the magnificent Festetics Palace — one of Hungary’s most beautiful Baroque palaces, with 100 rooms and a stunning library. Return to Badacsony for a final sunset wine on the terrace.

Transport: Bus to Hévíz €3–4, bus to Keszthely €2.

Entry costs: Hévíz thermal lake €14–18, Festetics Palace €8–12.

Pro Tip: The Hévíz lake is natural and much warmer than it looks — don’t be fooled by the outdoor setting. The 33°C water is perfectly comfortable even on cool days.

Day 7: Return to Budapest & Departure

Morning train or bus from Badacsony/Balatonfüred back to Budapest (2-2.5 hours). Depending on your departure time, spend a last couple of hours exploring any missed sights — the Széchenyi Baths for one more soak, the Great Market Hall for last-minute shopping, or simply sit at a café at Liszt Ferenc Square and watch Budapest go by before heading to the airport or station.

Transport: Return train to Budapest €7–10.

Pro Tip: If your flight is in the evening, stash your luggage at a left-luggage office at Keleti station or Nyugati station and enjoy a final Budapest afternoon unencumbered.
