Kraków to Zakopane: Royal City to Alpine Peaks in Seven Days

Southern Poland is where the country’s greatest hits live — the medieval splendour of Kraków, the underground wonder of the Wieliczka Salt Mine, the poignant history of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and the alpine majesty of the Tatra Mountains around Zakopane. This seven-day loop packs all of it into a relaxed, well-paced itinerary with plenty of time for hiking, eating, and soaking up mountain culture. It’s the most popular route in Poland for a reason — and it works year-round. Estimated budget: €350–600 per person.

7-Day Itinerary Overview

Route: Kraków (3 days) → Zakopane & Tatra Mountains (3 days) → Kraków departure (1 day)

Best for: First-time visitors to Poland, hikers and nature lovers, history enthusiasts, couples

Budget: €350–600 per person (excluding accommodation)

Direction: Fly into Kraków → bus to Zakopane → bus back to Kraków for departure. Simple and efficient.

Getting There & Getting Around

Getting to Kraków

Kraków John Paul II Airport (KRK) is well-connected from most European cities via budget airlines. The train to Kraków Główny takes 20 minutes (17 PLN). Intercity buses and trains also connect from Warsaw (2.5 hours), Wrocław (3 hours), and Gdańsk (6 hours by train).

Kraków to Zakopane & Back

Kraków to Zakopane: 2 hours by bus (FlixBus, PKS, or shared minibus), 25-50 PLN each way. Buses depart from Kraków’s main bus station (next to the train station). By car: the Zakopianka highway takes 1.5-2 hours (winter driving can be challenging). Local buses from Zakopane centre run regularly to all major trailheads.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Kraków — Wawel Castle & Old Town

☀️ Morning

Arrive in Kraków and start at Wawel Castle (arrive by 9 AM). Explore the State Rooms (24 PLN), the Crown Treasury, and the magnificent Wawel Cathedral with its royal tombs and Sigismund Bell. Allow 3 hours. Walk down to the Wawel Dragon statue below the castle walls.

🌆 Afternoon & Evening

Walk to the Main Market Square — Europe’s largest medieval square. Visit St. Mary’s Basilica and climb the tower (15 PLN). Explore the Rynek Underground Museum (32 PLN) — the archaeological exhibition beneath the square. Evening: dinner on the square and a walk through the illuminated Planty Park that surrounds the Old Town.

Where to eat: Lunch at Bar Mleczny Polonia ($3-5). Dinner at Pod Wawelem ($10-15) for traditional Polish food under the castle walls. Craft beer at House of Beer.

Accommodation: Kraków Old Town or Kazimierz guesthouse ($30-60/night).

Pro Tip: Book your Wawel State Rooms tickets online the day before. The queue for same-day tickets can exceed an hour in peak season.

Day 2: Kraków — Kazimierz & Schindler’s Factory

☀️ Morning

Explore the Kazimierz Jewish Quarter. Start at Plac Nowy for a zapiekanka breakfast. Visit the Old Synagogue and Remuh Synagogue (10 PLN). Walk the atmospheric streets of Szeroka and Józefa, stopping at vintage shops and art galleries.

🌆 Afternoon & Evening

Walk south to Oskar Schindler’s Factory (30 PLN, book online). This world-class museum documents the Nazi occupation of Kraków through powerful, immersive exhibits. Allow 2 hours. Walk to Ghetto Heroes Square with its empty chairs memorial. Evening: free walking tour of Kazimierz (departs 4 PM from Plac Nowy, tip-based) or explore the district’s legendary nightlife.

Where to eat: Breakfast at Plac Nowy — zapiekanka at Endzior ($2-3). Dinner at Zazie Bistro ($10-15). Vodka at Alchemia — the most famous bar in Kazimierz.

Entry fee: Schindler’s Factory 30 PLN, Old Synagogue 10 PLN.

Pro Tip: Book Schindler’s Factory online at least a day ahead — same-day tickets often sell out by 11 AM. The free walking tour from Plac Nowy is excellent.

Day 3: Wieliczka Salt Mine & Evening in Kraków

☀️ Morning & Afternoon

Take the train from Kraków Główny to Wieliczka (25 minutes, 4 PLN). The Wieliczka Salt Mine is a wonder — nine levels, 300 km of tunnels, and the breathtaking Chapel of St. Kinga, a cathedral carved entirely from salt 54 metres underground. The tour takes 3 hours and covers 800 steps. Constant 14°C — bring a jacket.

🌆 Evening

Return to Kraków. Pack your bags for tomorrow’s move to Zakopane. Spend your last evening in Kraków enjoying a final Polish dinner and soaking in the atmosphere of the Main Square one last time.

Where to eat: Lunch in Wieliczka at Restauracja Pod Wielką Solą ($6-10). Farewell dinner in Kraków at Morskie Oko ($8-12) — a traditional tavern with live folk music.

Entry fee: Wieliczka 99 PLN (book online!).

Pro Tip: Book the 10 AM tour slot — the mine is less crowded in the morning. The underground lakes and salt chandeliers in the Chapel of St. Kinga are the most photographed parts of the mine.

Day 4: Travel to Zakopane & Gubałówka

☀️ Morning

Take a bus from Kraków to Zakopane (2 hours, 25-50 PLN). Arrive at Zakopane’s bus station — your accommodation is likely within walking distance or a short taxi ride away. Drop your bags and head to the funicular station at the bottom of Krupówki Street.

🌆 Afternoon & Evening

Take the funicular to Gubałówka Mountain (35 PLN return). The viewing platform at 1,123 metres offers one of the most spectacular panoramas in Poland — the entire Tatra range laid out before you. Walk the Gubałówka ridge, buy grilled oscypek cheese from the mountain vendors, and hike back down through the forest (40 minutes). Evening: explore Krupówki Street — the lively pedestrian promenade packed with food stalls, souvenir shops, and Goral musicians.

Where to eat: Lunch on Gubałówka — grilled oscypek with cranberry jam ($2-3) and hot mulled wine. Dinner at Karczma Po Zbójnicku ($8-12) for the most atmospheric Goral food in Zakopane. Try kwaśnica (sauerkraut soup).

Accommodation: Zakopane guesthouse or hotel ($30-70/night).

Pro Tip: Walk down from Gubałówka instead of taking the funicular — the 40-minute forest trail is beautiful and completely free. Wear shoes with good grip as parts can be muddy.

Day 5: Morskie Oko — The Most Beautiful Lake in Poland

☀️ Full Day

Today is the highlight for many — a full-day hike to Morskie Oko, the most beautiful glacial lake in the Tatra Mountains. Take a local bus from Zakopane to Palenica Białczańska (20 minutes, frequent departures). From there, it’s an 8-km hike up a paved road (about 2 hours, moderate). The lake sits at 1,395 metres, surrounded by dramatic granite walls. Enjoy lunch at the mountain hut. For the truly ambitious, continue another 45 minutes to Czarny Staw (Black Lake) for even more dramatic views. Return the same way or take a horse-drawn carriage (furmanka) back down (about 60 PLN per person).

Where to eat: Pack sandwiches and snacks from Zakopane. The mountain hut at Morskie Oko (Schronisko PTTK) serves hot soup ($3-5), pierogi, and tea — cash only. Bring 50-100 PLN for the hut.

Entry fee: Tatra National Park 8 PLN (cash at the gate).

Pro Tip: ARRIVE BEFORE 7 AM. The park gate opens at 6:00 in summer — the bus from Zakopane leaves from 5:30 AM. After 9 AM, the trail is packed. In the early morning, you’ll have the lake nearly to yourself and the glass-like reflections are unforgettable.

Day 6: Kasprowy Wierch & Thermal Pools

☀️ Morning

Take the cable car from Kuźnice to Kasprowy Wierch (1,987 metres — 99 PLN return, book online). The views from the top stretch across the Polish Tatras into Slovakia. Walk the alpine ridge trail (easy, 30 minutes to the summit cross). The air at this altitude is thin and clean — on clear days, you can see 100 km in every direction.

🌆 Afternoon & Evening

Descend and take a bus or taxi to Termy Bukovina (15 minutes, about 20 PLN shared) — an incredible thermal pool complex surrounded by mountains. Soak in 38°C geothermal water while looking at snowy peaks. Or visit Termy Gorący Potok in Szaflary if you prefer smaller, more intimate pools. Return to Zakopane for a farewell dinner.

Where to eat: Lunch at Bakowo Zohylina Nizu ($8-12) for modern Goral cuisine — arguably the best restaurant in Zakopane. Thermal pool cafés serve drinks and snacks. Farewell dinner at Karczma Czarci Jar ($8-12) for enormous portions of mountain cuisine.

Entry fees: Cable car 99 PLN (book online), thermal pools 60-90 PLN.

Pro Tip: Kasprowy cable car queues can be 2+ hours in summer — book the earliest morning slot online. The top is 10°C cooler than Zakopane — bring a warm jacket even in August. Thermal pools are best in late afternoon when the light softens over the mountains.

Day 7: Chochołów Village & Return to Kraków

☀️ Morning

Before leaving, take a bus to Chochołów (20 minutes, 10 PLN) — the most beautifully preserved Goral village in the region. An entire street lined with perfectly maintained 19th-century wooden cottages, each one a work of folk architecture. Walk the main street, visit the small regional museum (10 PLN), and have a final oscypek from a village producer.

🌆 Afternoon

Take the bus back to Kraków (2 hours, 25-50 PLN). If your flight is late, store luggage at Kraków Główny station and use your final hours for last-minute souvenir shopping on Mariacka Street (amber jewellery, leather goods). Head to the airport in time for departure.

Where to eat: Brunch in Chochołów — fresh oscypek with bread from a village vendor ($2-3). Lunch in Kraków at Pierogarnia Krakowiacy ($4-7) for a final plate of pierogi before flying home.

Transport: Chochołów bus 10 PLN, Kraków bus 25-50 PLN.

Pro Tip: Chochołów is most atmospheric in the morning before the day-trippers arrive. The village has a famous church with a beautiful polychrome interior — ask the caretaker to open it for you (small tip appreciated).
