Getting There & Getting Around

Getting to Brașov

By train: Regular CFR trains from Bucharest Nord to Brașov — 2.5 hours, €8-15 for a seat in first class. The mountain scenery on the way is spectacular as the train climbs through the Prahova Valley past Sinaia and Predeal.

By car: A3 motorway from Bucharest (not fully complete) or the scenic DN1 via Sinaia (2.5-3 hours).

By bus: Multiple daily buses from Bucharest’s Autogara Militari (€7-10, 3 hours).

Visa: Same as Bucharest — EU entry rules apply.

Getting Around Transylvania

Rental car: The best option for this route. Car rental in Brașov costs €25-40/day. Roads between Brașov, Sighișoara, and Sibiu are good and well-signposted. Total driving distance: about 350 km.

Train: CFR trains connect all four cities, though Sighișoara to Sibiu requires a transfer at Medias (2.5 hours total). Train travel is cheap but slower.

Bus: Autogări (bus stations) in each city have frequent connections. Brașov to Sighișoara is €6-8, 2 hours.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Brașov & Bran Castle

☀️ Morning

Arrive in Brașov and head straight to Bran Castle (30 min by bus 20 from Autogara 2, €1.50). Arrive at 9:00 AM when it opens to beat the crowds. Spend 2 hours exploring the turrets, secret passages, and the torture chamber. Don’t miss the open-air craft market just outside the castle gates.

🌆 Afternoon & Evening

Return to Brașov and explore Piața Sfatului (Council Square). Climb the Town Hall Tower for views, visit the Black Church (€2.50), then take the cable car up Tâmpa Mountain (€4 return) for the classic panoramic view of the city against the Carpathians. In the evening, the square’s restaurants and bars are buzzing — book a table at one of the Saxon-themed restaurants.

Day 2: Poiana Brașov & Sighișoara

Morning hike or cable car ride in Poiana Brașov (bus 20 from Brașov, 30 min). Even in summer, the alpine air and views of the Bucegi Mountains are spectacular. Take the gondola up to the Capra Neagră peak for a 360-degree panorama. Return to Brașov by 11 AM.

🌆 Afternoon

Drive or take a bus to Sighișoara (2 hours, €6-8). Drop your bags and dive into the UNESCO-listed citadel. Climb the Clock Tower (€3.50) for the iconic view over the red-tiled roofs. Walk the Covered Stairway up to the Church on the Hill, then wander the citadel’s cobblestone streets as the daylight softens. The citadel is most magical in the late afternoon when the day-trippers leave.

Day 3: Sighișoara Morning & Transfer to Sibiu

Start early with a coffee in Piața Mică while the citadel is still waking up. Visit the Guild Museum and the underground Torture Chamber (combined ticket with Clock Tower, €2 extra). Walk the citadel walls between the Tailors’ Tower and the Furriers’ Tower for a different perspective. Buy some local honey or palincă from the citadel shops before leaving.

Travel to Sibiu (2.5 hours by car via the DN13 route through Mediaș, or 3-4 hours by train with one change). Walk across the Bridge of Lies at dusk.

Day 4: Sibiu Deep Dive

Full day in Sibiu. Start at the Brukenthal National Museum (€6) — Romania’s oldest museum, with a superb collection of European art, Romanian icons, and natural history. Then visit the Evangelical Cathedral and climb the tower (€2.50) for another spectacular Transylvanian roofscape.

🌆 Afternoon

Take bus 9 or 11 (€1) to the Astra National Museum Complex — the open-air ethnographic park in Dumbrava Forest. Spend 3 hours wandering among 400+ traditional buildings from across Romania. Don’t miss the working watermills and the traditional churches. Return to the centre and explore the cobbled streets of the Lower Town, Sibiu’s original medieval artisans’ quarter with its colourful houses, now full of galleries and craft shops.

Where to eat: Lunch at Crama Sibiana near Piața Mare (€6-10, traditional Romanian cellar). Dinner at Kraft (€7-12, excellent Romanian craft beer and hearty food).

Transport: Bus 9 or 11 to Astra (€1).

Pro Tip: Sibiu has a rooftop bar scene. Noblesse Rooftop and Kraft Rooftop both offer stunning views over the red-roofed Upper Town. Go for sunset drinks.

Day 5: Sibiu to Cluj-Napoca via Turda

Depart Sibiu toward Cluj-Napoca (3 hours by car, 4 hours by train via Teiuș). Stop at Turda Salt Mine — 45 minutes before Cluj. This is one of Europe’s most spectacular underground attractions: a former salt mine 120 metres deep transformed into an underground theme park with a lake you can row across, a Ferris wheel, and surreal acoustics. Spend 2 hours here (€10 entry).

🌆 Afternoon

Continue to Cluj-Napoca. Spend your final afternoon exploring Piața Unirii with the Gothic St. Michael’s Church and Matthias Corvinus statue. Visit the Botanical Garden (€3) for a peaceful stroll, then wander down Str. Tipografiei — Cluj’s charming coffee lane — for a farewell flat white. If your departure allows, stay for dinner and experience Cluj’s famous nightlife.

Pro Tip: Cluj-Napoca’s airport (CLJ) has excellent connections across Europe with Wizz Air and Ryanair. If your schedule is tight, you can visit Turda on Day 4 as a long day trip from Sibiu and save Cluj for a separate trip.

Same as Romania: EU entry rules. Most nationalities get 90-day visa-free stays. No internal border checks between Transylvania cities. Always verify current rules.

SIM Card & Internet

Orange and Vodafone cover all four cities well. Buy a tourist SIM at any shop (€5-8, 15-20 GB). 4G coverage is reliable in towns and along major roads — patchier in mountain passes.

Money & ATMs

ATMs in all towns. Credit cards widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shops. Carry cash for rural stops, markets, and small guesthouses. €1 ≈ 5 RON.
