Practical Information for Romania
Visas & Entry
EU entry rules. 90-day visa-free for most nationalities. Romania is not fully Schengen — keep your passport for occasional checks, especially near the Ukrainian border (Maramureș).
SIM Card & Internet
Orange or Vodafone tourist SIM (€5-8, 15-20 GB). Coverage in cities is excellent. Bucovina and Maramureș have patchy rural coverage. The Carpathian passes have no signal.
Money & ATMs
Leu (RON), €1 ≈ 5 RON. ATMs in all cities, some towns. CRITICAL: Maramureș and Bucovina villages have few ATMs. Withdraw cash in Cluj or Suceava before heading into rural areas.
Language & Communication
English is widely spoken in tourist areas but less so in rural Maramureș and Bucovina. Download Google Translate with Romanian offline. A smile and a few words of Romanian go a long way.
Best Time to Visit
June–September for the full route. The Transfăgărășan is open, mountain hiking weather is good, and the painted monastery frescoes show best in good light. May and October are possible with fewer crowds but the mountain road is closed. For winter visits, skip the Transfăgărășan and add skiing in Poiana Brașov.
Health & Safety
Very safe country. Pickpocketing in crowded areas is the main concern. Mountain hiking requires proper footwear and weather awareness. In Maramureș and Bucovina, the roads can be rough — drive carefully. EU health card valid for EU citizens. Travel insurance recommended for everyone.
