Bucharest Round Trip: Three Weeks Exploring Romania’s Hidden Depths
Three weeks is the ultimate Romania experience. This itinerary covers every major region of the country in a well-paced, thoughtfully designed loop from Bucharest. You’ll explore the lively capital, the Carpathian castles, medieval Transylvania, the wild Maramureș, the painted monasteries of Bucovina, Europe’s last great wetland wilderness, and the Black Sea coast. There’s even time for hiking in the Carpathians, relaxing at a mountain spa, and visiting one of Europe’s most extraordinary salt mines. This is not a rushed itinerary — it’s a journey through one of Europe’s most underrated, beautiful, and diverse countries. Estimated budget: €2,200–3,500.

Getting There & Getting Around
Arriving & Departing
Fly into Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport. Depart from the same airport. If your schedule allows, the 21-day loop can also start from Cluj-Napoca if you find cheaper flights — reverse the order to finish in Bucharest.
Visa: EU entry rules. 90-day visa-free for most nationalities. Ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity.
Getting Around
Rental car (recommended): Rent in Bucharest, drop off in Bucharest (no one-way fees). €25-40/day, total ~2,000 km. Romania’s roads are good on main routes but rural roads are rough.
Public transport: Viable with good connections between major cities but slower. Train Bucovina→Bucharest (€18-25, 6h), bus Bucharest→Tulcea (€12, 4h), boat Tulcea→Delta villages (€5-8, 2-3h).
Combination: Car for the first 2 weeks (Bucharest to Bucovina), then drop the car and use buses/trains/boats for the delta and coast section. This saves on long one-way drives.

Practical Information for Romania
Visas & Entry
EU entry rules. Most nationalities get 90-day visa-free stays. Romania applies standard Schengen-style checks at borders despite not being fully Schengen. Keep your passport accessible near the Ukrainian border.
SIM Card & Internet
Orange or Vodafone tourist SIM (€5-8, 15-20 GB, valid 30 days). 4G coverage: excellent in cities and most highways, good in towns, patchy in the delta and remote Carpathian passes. Download offline maps for the delta and mountain sections.
Money & ATMs
Romanian Leu (RON). €1 ≈ 5 RON. Withdraw cash at city ATMs before heading into rural areas. ATMs exist but are not always reliable in Maramureș villages, Bucovina, and the delta. 10% tip is customary in restaurants. Credit cards widely accepted in cities but cash is preferred in the countryside.
Language & Communication
Romanian (a Romance language). English widely spoken by younger people and in tourist areas. German is also spoken in some Transylvanian areas. French and Italian have some mutual intelligibility with Romanian. Download Google Translate offline mode for rural areas.
Best Time to Visit
June–September for the complete itinerary. The Transfăgărășan Highway is open, the delta is teeming with birds, the Black Sea is warm, and mountain hiking weather is reliable. May and October work with adjustments — the mountain road will be closed. July-August is peak season for the coast and Brașov area; book accommodation in advance.
Health & Safety
Romania is very safe for tourists. The biggest risks are road-related (rural roads can be rough, mountain roads are winding, livestock on roads is common). Health: tap water in cities is chlorinated but most locals drink bottled. Mosquito repellent essential in the delta. EU health card valid for EU citizens. Comprehensive travel insurance recommended for everyone, particularly covering mountain rescue and medical evacuation from the delta.
