Nestled in the heart of Slovakia, Banská Bystrica is a city with a rich and storied past that stretches back to the medieval era. Established in the 13th century, its development was shaped by the mining industry. The city’s very name — meaning “Mining Bystrica” — reflects its early importance as a major center for silver mining. By the late 13th century, rich silver deposits had transformed it into one of the most prosperous mining towns in Central Europe.

The city’s fortunes soared when King Louis I of Anjou granted it town privileges in 1376. This royal charter allowed Banská Bystrica to flourish as a significant economic and cultural hub. During the 16th century, Banská Bystrica became a key stronghold of the Protestant Reformation.
