Bucharest Round Trip: Two Weeks Through Romania’s Hidden Depths

Two weeks allows you to see not just Romania’s well-known highlights but also two of its most extraordinary and lesser-visited regions: Maramureș with its UNESCO wooden churches and Bucovina with its world-famous painted monasteries. This comprehensive loop from Bucharest takes you through the Carpathians, Saxon Transylvania, the remote north, and ends back in the capital. You’ll see Dracula’s castle, medieval citadels, the Transfăgărășan Highway, traditional Maramureș villages, and frescoed churches that have no equal anywhere in Europe. Estimated budget: €1,500–2,200.

14-Day Itinerary Overview

Route: Bucharest (1) → Brașov & Bran (2) → Sighișoara (1) → Sibiu & Transfăgărășan (3) → Cluj & Turda (2) → Maramureș (2) → Bucovina (2) → Danube Delta (1)

Best for: Deep-dive travellers, culture and history enthusiasts, those wanting to see both well-known and off-the-beaten-path Romania

Budget: €1,500–2,200 per person (excluding international flights)

Direction: Full loop from Bucharest — the road route covers roughly 1,500 km. Return to Bucharest by train from Suceava.

Getting There & Getting Around

Arriving & Departing

Fly into Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport (OTP). For the return, take the train from Suceava (Bucovina) to Bucharest (6 hours, €18-25 first class) or fly Suceava→Bucharest (1h, €25-40 with Tarom).

Visa: EU entry rules. 90-day visa-free stay for most nationalities.

Getting Around

Rental car: Essential for this route — much of Maramureș and Bucovina has limited public transport. Rent in Bucharest (€25-40/day). Drop off at Sibiu or Cluj and switch to public transport for the northern section to save on one-way fees. Total driving: ~1,500 km over 10 driving days.

Public transport: Cluj→Maramureș (bus, €8-12, 3h), Maramureș→Bucovina (bus with transfer at Baia Mare, €12-15, 5h), Bucovina→Bucharest (train, €18-25, 6h).

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Days 1-2: Bucharest → Brașov & Bran

Day 1 ☀️ Bucharest

Arrive in Bucharest. Visit Palace of the Parliament (9 AM tour, €8), Old Town, Romanian Athenaeum (€5), Cișmigiu Gardens. Evening in Lipscani.

Day 2 ☀️ Carpathian Castles

Drive to Sinaia for Peleș Castle (€10, 9 AM). Continue to Brașov. Afternoon: Bran Castle (€9) + Tâmpa cable car (€4) for sunset. Overnight in Brașov.

Where to eat (Day 1): Dinner at Caru’ cu Bere (€8-12). Day 2: Lunch in Bran at market terraces (€5-8). Dinner in Brașov at Cesu’ cu Bere (€6-10, microbrewery with excellent food).

Accommodation: Bucharest (€30-55) + Brașov (€35-60).

Pro Tip: Pick up your rental car at the end of Day 1 or early Day 2 morning. Driving out of Bucharest is much easier at 8 AM than at 5 PM.

Days 3-4: Sighișoara & Sibiu

Day 3 ☀️ Sighișoara

Drive from Brașov to Sighișoara (1.5h). Explore the UNESCO citadel: Clock Tower (€3.50), Church on the Hill via Covered Stairway, citadel walls, Torture Chamber. Spend the night inside the citadel.

Day 4 ☀️ Sibiu

Morning drive to Sibiu (1.5h via Biertan). Afternoon: Piața Mare, Council Tower (€2), Brukenthal Museum (€6), Evangelical Cathedral (€2.50), Bridge of Lies, Lower Town. Rooftop bar at sunset.

Where to eat: Day 3 dinner at Gasthaus Klingsor in Sighișoara (€7-10). Day 4 lunch at Crama Sibiana (€6-10), dinner at Max Restaurant (€8-14).

Accommodation: Sighișoara citadel (€35-55) + Sibiu (€40-65).

Pro Tip: On the drive from Sighișoara to Sibiu, stop at Biertan — its UNESCO-listed fortified church has one of the most intricate altarpieces in Transylvania.

Day 5: Transfăgărășan Highway

☀️ Full Day

Leave Sibiu at 7 AM. Drive the DN7C Transfăgărășan Highway (open June-October only). Stop at Bâlea Lake (2,034m) for the ridge trail hike. Descend south and visit Poienari Fortress (€4, 1,480 steps). Return to Sibiu by evening.

Where to eat: Lunch at Bâlea Lake Chalet (€6-10). Pack water and warm layers — the mountain weather changes fast despite summer.

Transport: Car rental (included). Fuel: ~€25 for the day.

Pro Tip: The road is typically open 7 AM-9 PM in summer. Start early to avoid afternoon clouds that often cover the summit — the best visibility is 8-11 AM.

Days 6-7: Cluj-Napoca & Turda Salt Mine

Day 6 ☀️ Travel to Cluj

Drive Sibiu→Cluj (3h) via Turda Salt Mine (€10, 45-min stop). Check into Cluj accommodation. Afternoon: Piața Unirii, St. Michael’s Church, cafe culture on Str. Tipografiei, Botanical Garden (€3). Evening: Cluj nightlife.

Day 7 ☀️ Apuseni Mountains Day Trip

Day trip to the Apuseni Mountains (1h drive). Visit Scărișoara Ice Cave (€5) — a natural ice cave with a glacier that never melts. Hike through the surrounding karst landscape. Also visit Bear Cave (€6) — one of Europe’s most spectacular show caves. Return to Cluj for the evening.

Where to eat: Day 6 lunch at Baracca (€4-7), dinner at Samsara (€6-10). Day 7 picnic or restaurant near the caves (€5-8).

Accommodation: Cluj (€35-60).

Pro Tip: The Apuseni day trip requires a car or a pre-booked tour. Ask your guesthouse — many organize group trips to the ice cave for €20-25/person including transport.

Days 8-9: Maramureș — Wooden Churches & Merry Cemetery

Day 8 ☀️ Cluj to Maramureș

Drive (3h) or take the bus from Cluj to Sighetu Marmației (€8-12, 3h). Visit the Merry Cemetery in Săpânța (€2) — the world’s most colourful graveyard with carved wooden crosses in vibrant blue. Each cross tells the life story of the deceased in rhyming couplets. It sounds macabre but is one of the most joyful sights in Romania.

Day 9 ☀️ Maramureș Deep Dive

Full day in Maramureș. Visit the UNESCO Wooden Churches: Bârsana (tallest, 57m), Ieud (oldest, 1364), and Poienile Izei (richest interior paintings). Drive the Mocănița steam train in Vișeu de Sus (€15, 3h round trip) through the Vaser Valley. In the evening, visit Breb — the most beautiful traditional village in Maramureș — for sunset and a home-cooked dinner with a local family.

Where to eat: Day 8 dinner at Dacii Restaurant in Sighetu Marmației (€5-8). Day 9 afternoon: traditional dinner in Breb with a local family (€8-12, must be arranged through your guesthouse).

Accommodation: Guesthouse in Breb or Sighetu Marmației (€25-40).

Pro Tip: Maramureș is best explored with a local guide. Ask your guesthouse — they usually know a driver-guide who speaks English (€40-60/day). Without one, finding the wooden churches requires a GPS and patience.

Days 10-11: Bucovina — Painted Monasteries

Day 10 ☀️ Maramureș to Bucovina

Travel from Sighetu Marmației to Suceava, the gateway to Bucovina (bus 5h via Baia Mare, €12-15, or drive 3.5h). Base yourself in Gura Humorului for easier access to the monasteries.

Day 11 ☀️ Painted Monasteries Tour

Full-day tour of Bucovina’s UNESCO painted monasteries. Visit Voronet Monastery (1488 — the “Sistine Chapel of the East”, €3), Moldovița (€3), Sucevița (€3), and Arbore (€2). Each church is completely covered in vivid 15th-16th century frescoes depicting biblical scenes — the blues at Voroneț are so vivid they’re known as “Voroneț blue.” Allow 2-3 hours per monastery.

Where to eat: Day 10 dinner in Gura Humorului at Pizzeria Classico (€5-8). Day 11 lunch at Hanul Voroneț (€5-10, traditional food near Voroneț Monastery).

Accommodation: Guesthouse in Gura Humorului (€25-45).

Pro Tip: The monasteries are most photogenic in the late afternoon golden hour. Visit Voroneț last (3-5 PM) for the best light on its famous blue frescoes. Hire a guide in Gura Humorului (€25-35/person) who can explain the fresco symbolism.

Days 12-13: Ceahlău Massif & Return South

Day 12 ☀️ Ceahlău National Park

From Gura Humorului, drive 2h south to Ceahlău Massif — the “Olympus of the Carpathians.” This is Romania’s best hiking destination outside Transylvania. Hike the Toaca Peak trail (4h return, moderate, stunning views of the Eastern Carpathians). Overnight at a mountain chalet or in the nearby town of Durau.

Day 13 ☀️ Train to Bucharest

Drive or bus to Suceava (1h). Take the afternoon train to Bucharest (6h, €18-25 first class). The route crosses the Carpathian foothills and the scenery is lovely. Arrive in Bucharest Nord station in the evening. Check in for your final night.

Where to eat: Day 12 lunch at Ceahlău chalet (€4-6). Day 13 farewell dinner in Bucharest at Expirat (€8-12, live music and excellent Romanian food).

Accommodation: Ceahlău area (€25-40) + Bucharest (€30-55).

Pro Tip: Book the Suceava→Bucharest train in advance at CFR Călători — first class is only €5 more than second and includes a coupe seat with a table.

Day 14: Bucharest Farewell & Departure

☀️ Morning

A final morning in Bucharest. Three options depending on your flight time: (1) Visit anything you missed from Day 1 — the Village Museum or Communist Museum. (2) Last-minute souvenir shopping at Obor Market. (3) Simply have a long brunch at a terrace cafe in the Old Town and watch Bucharest go by.

🌆 Afternoon

Return your rental car (or take a Bolt to the airport — €12-15). Fly out of Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport. Two weeks in Romania — castles, mountains, painted churches, wooden villages, and one of Europe’s last great wildernesses. You’ll leave already planning your return.

Where to eat: Farewell brunch at Zexe (€6-10, Piața Amzei area). Grab Covrigi (Romanian pretzels) for the airport (€0.50 each).
Pro Tip: If you drop your rental car at the airport, give yourself an extra 30 minutes — the rental return process can be slow in summer. Clear any fines (speeding camera tickets) before returning the keys.

Practical Information for Romania

Visas & Entry

EU entry rules. 90-day visa-free for most nationalities. Romania is not fully Schengen — keep your passport for occasional checks, especially near the Ukrainian border (Maramureș).

SIM Card & Internet

Orange or Vodafone tourist SIM (€5-8, 15-20 GB). Coverage in cities is excellent. Bucovina and Maramureș have patchy rural coverage. The Carpathian passes have no signal.

Money & ATMs

Leu (RON), €1 ≈ 5 RON. ATMs in all cities, some towns. CRITICAL: Maramureș and Bucovina villages have few ATMs. Withdraw cash in Cluj or Suceava before heading into rural areas.

Language & Communication

English is widely spoken in tourist areas but less so in rural Maramureș and Bucovina. Download Google Translate with Romanian offline. A smile and a few words of Romanian go a long way.

Best Time to Visit

June–September for the full route. The Transfăgărășan is open, mountain hiking weather is good, and the painted monastery frescoes show best in good light. May and October are possible with fewer crowds but the mountain road is closed. For winter visits, skip the Transfăgărășan and add skiing in Poiana Brașov.

Health & Safety

Very safe country. Pickpocketing in crowded areas is the main concern. Mountain hiking requires proper footwear and weather awareness. In Maramureș and Bucovina, the roads can be rough — drive carefully. EU health card valid for EU citizens. Travel insurance recommended for everyone.
