Days 9-10: Train from Cluj to Tulcea (7 hours, €25-35 first class), then boat into the delta. Alternatively, fly Cluj to Bucharest (€35-55) and take the bus to Tulcea. Return to Bucharest by bus from Tulcea (€12, 4 hours).

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Bucharest Arrival & Old Town

☀️ Morning – 🌆 Afternoon

Arrive, pick up your rental car, and check in. Spend the afternoon in the Old Town (Lipscani) — start at Stavropoleos Monastery, explore the streets, visit the National Museum of Romanian History (€4), and end at the Palace of the Parliament for a late tour (book ahead, €8).

Evening: Wander the Old Town at night — the terraces and clubs on Strada Franceză and Strada Covaci are buzzing until late. Try the local wine at one of the many wine bars.

Where to eat: Dinner at Hanul lui Manuc (€7-10, sarmale and mici). Late drinks at Interbelic — a cozy speakeasy-style bar.

Accommodation: Bucharest Old Town (€30-55).

Pro Tip: Pick up your car after Day 1 — driving in Bucharest is stressful. Save it for Day 2 when you head to the mountains. Use rideshares today.

Day 2: Peleș Castle, Brașov & Bran

☀️ Morning

Drive to Sinaia (1.5 hours) for Peleș Castle (€10). Arrive at 9 AM to beat the crowds. After, drive to Brașov (45 min) and check in.

🌆 Afternoon

Visit Bran Castle (30 min drive, €9) — aim for 2:30-4 PM when the crowd thins. Return to Brașov for sunset on Tâmpa Mountain via cable car (€4). Evening in Piața Sfatului.

Where to eat: Lunch in Bran at market terrace (€5-8). Dinner at Ograda in Brașov (€8-12, garden setting, traditional recipes with a modern twist).

Accommodation: Brașov Old Town (€35-60).

Pro Tip: Brașov to Bran and back is only 30 minutes each way — you can easily do Bran Castle in the off-peak window (after 2 PM) and have the morning free for Brașov.

Day 3: Brașov Morning to Sighișoara

☀️ Morning

Spend the morning in Brașov’s Piața Sfatului — visit the Black Church (€2.50), stroll the Schei district, walk along the medieval wall. Climb the Town Hall tower for one last view.

🌆 Afternoon

Drive to Sighișoara (1.5 hours). Spend the late afternoon exploring the UNESCO citadel, climb the Clock Tower (€3.50), and watch sunset from the citadel walls. Spend the night within the citadel — the empty streets after dark are magical.

Where to eat: Lunch near Sighișoara at Casa Vlad Dracul (€6-10). Dinner at Orașul de Jos Pub (€5-8, craft beer and Romanian tapas).

Accommodation: Inside Sighișoara citadel (€35-55).

Pro Tip: The citadel is most beautiful after 7 PM when the day-tripper buses have left and the cobblestones are yours alone. Take a midnight walk around the walls.

Day 4: Sibiu — European Capital of Culture

☀️ Morning

Drive to Sibiu (1.5 hours via Biertan or the A1). Check into your accommodation, then head to Piața Mare. Climb the Council Tower (€2), visit the Brukenthal Museum (€6), and the Evangelical Cathedral (tower climb €2.50).

🌆 Afternoon

Take bus 9 to the Astra Open-Air Museum (€6, 3 hours). Return to the Upper Town and cross the Bridge of Lies into the Lower Town for craft shopping and gallery browsing.

Accommodation: Sibiu Upper Town (€40-65).

Pro Tip: Sibiu has a vibrant craft beer scene. Visit Kraft Brewery for a tasting flight (€5-7 for 5 beers).

Day 5: Transfăgărășan Highway Day Trip

☀️ Full Day

Leave Sibiu by 7 AM and drive the Transfăgărășan Highway (DN7C). This is the highlight of the trip — a spectacular alpine road climbing to 2,045 metres through tunnels, hairpins, and glacial valleys. Stop at Bâlea Lake (hike the ridge trail), visit Poienari Fortress (Vlad Țepeș’s real castle, 1,480 steps up, €4), and enjoy the mountain scenery. Return to Sibiu by mid-evening.

Where to eat: Lunch at Bâlea Lake Chalet (€6-10). Pack extra water and snacks. Dinner back in Sibiu at Andersons (€6-10).

Transport: Car rental (fuel included in budget).

Pro Tip: The road opens only from late June to October. Check CNADNR before you go. Fill up before leaving Sibiu — there’s no petrol on the mountain.

Day 6: Cluj-Napoca — Transylvania’s Coolest City

☀️ Morning

Drive from Sibiu to Cluj-Napoca (3 hours). Drop your rental car and check in. Spend the morning exploring Piața Unirii — visit St. Michael’s Church and the Matthias Corvinus statue. Climb the church tower for stunning views (€3).

🌆 Afternoon & Evening

Visit the Botanical Garden (€3), then explore Str. Tipografiei for Cluj’s famous cafe culture. In the evening, experience Cluj’s nightlife — start at Enigma Cafe (a quirky board game bar) and end at Form Space or Atelier Cafe for music.

Where to eat: Lunch at Olivo (€4-7, best coffee and sandwiches). Dinner at Baracca (€8-12, creative Romanian).

Accommodation: Cluj city centre (€35-60).

Entry: St. Michael’s tower (€3), Botanical Garden (€3).

Pro Tip: On the drive from Sibiu to Cluj, stop at Turda Salt Mine (€10, 45 min detour). It’s one of Romania’s most extraordinary underground attractions — a salt mine with an underground lake and Ferris wheel.

Day 7: Travel Day — Cluj to Tulcea via Bucharest

☀️ Morning – 🌆 Evening

A travel day but doable. Option A (recommended): Fly Cluj→Bucharest (1h, €35-55 with Wizz/Ryanair), then bus or train Bucharest→Tulcea (4h by bus from Autogara Obor, €12). Option B: Direct train Cluj→Tulcea (7-8h, €25-35, one transfer at Adjud). Less comfortable but cheaper.

Arrive in Tulcea in the early evening. Walk along the Danube promenade and have a pre-delta dinner. Most boat trips to the delta villages leave early in the morning.

Where to eat: Dinner in Tulcea at Lebăda Restaurant (€6-10, excellent fish soup and grilled zander on the waterfront).

Accommodation: Tulcea guesthouse (€25-40).

Pro Tip: Pack for the delta before you leave Cluj — there are fewer shops in Tulcea and the delta villages have no ATMs. Bring all the cash you’ll need for 2 days.

Day 8: Into the Danube Delta

☀️ Morning

Catch the morning public boat from Tulcea to Crișan or Sfântu Gheorghe (2-3 hours, €5-8). Check into your village guesthouse, then head out with a local guide for a half-day boat trip through the reed canals. You’ll see pelicans, cormorants, herons, and perhaps wild horses along the banks.

🌆 Afternoon & Evening

Afternoon boat trip deeper into the delta — visit the Letea Forest for liana-covered oak trees and the famous wild horses (300+ year-round). Evening: traditional Lipovan dinner with your guesthouse hosts — freshly caught fish, homemade pickles, and local wine.

Where to eat: Guesthouse dinner included in most stays (€12-18 for full board). Ask your host for bors de pește (sour fish soup).

Accommodation: Delta village guesthouse (€25-45/night with half board).

Activities: Boat tour (€20-30/person for 4 hours).

Pro Tip: Stay at a guesthouse in Crișan — it’s the largest delta village with the best services. Ask your host to arrange a sunrise birdwatching boat trip (5:30 AM start) — that’s when the delta is truly magical.

Day 9: Danube Delta Deep Dive

☀️ Morning

Sunrise birdwatching boat trip (5:30-8:00 AM) — the delta is most active at dawn. Thousands of birds take flight as the sun rises over the reed beds. Return to your guesthouse for a hearty breakfast.

🌆 Afternoon

Visit Mila 23 — a traditional Lipovan fishing village with colourful houses and a fascinating history. Learn about Lipovan culture, visit the small local museum (€2), and watch the fishermen return at 4-5 PM with their catch. In the late afternoon, take a boat to a quiet channel for swimming in the warm, shallow waters.

Where to eat: Lunch in Mila 23 at Popasul Pescarilor (€4-7, simple but excellent fish soup). Your guesthouse provides dinner.

Activities: Birdwatching boat (€15-25), Mila 23 museum (€2).

Pro Tip: Bring binoculars if you have them. If not, most boat guides have a pair you can borrow. Ask your guide to turn off the engine and let the boat drift in the narrow channels — the silence is unforgettable.

Day 10: Return to Bucharest & Departure

☀️ Morning

Early morning boat back to Tulcea (2-3 hours). From Tulcea, take the direct bus to Bucharest (Autogara Obor, 4 hours, €12). Buses run every 2 hours.

🌆 Afternoon

Arrive in Bucharest with time for a last Romanian meal and any last-minute souvenirs at Obor Market. Head to Henri Coandă Airport for your departure. If your flight is late, leave luggage at the airport and enjoy a final walk through the Old Town.

Where to eat: Farewell lunch near Bucharest’s Obor Market at La Ceainărie (€5-8, Romanian soups and stews). Grab covrigi (Romanian pretzels) at any street stand (€0.50).

Transport: Tulcea→Bucharest bus (€12, 4h).

Pro Tip: Book the bus from Tulcea to Bucharest in advance at the Autogara — the midday buses fill up. The 8 AM departure gets you to Bucharest by noon, giving you a full afternoon before your flight.

Practical Information for Romania

Visas & Entry

EU entry rules for Romania. 90-day visa-free stay for most nationalities. No internal checks between Romanian cities. The Danube Delta has occasional police boat patrols — carry your passport.

SIM Card & Internet

Orange or Vodafone tourist SIM (€5-8, 15-20 GB). The delta has patchy 4G in villages; no signal in most reed areas. Download offline maps for the delta boat routes.

Money & ATMs

Romanian Leu (RON), €1 ≈ 5 RON. CRITICAL FOR THE DELTA: There are NO ATMs in the delta villages. Withdraw all the cash you need in Tulcea. Credit cards accepted in cities but not in the delta.

Language & Communication

Romanian widely spoken. English in tourist areas. In the delta, many older fishermen speak only Romanian and Russian (Lipovan dialect). Your guesthouse hosts will likely speak basic English.

Best Time to Visit

Late June–September for both the Transfăgărășan and bird migration. July-August: peak wildflowers in mountains, warmest delta weather (30-35°C). May-June: best for baby animals in the delta. September: quieter roads and golden landscapes.

Health & Safety

Romania is very safe. In the delta, bring strong mosquito repellent (DEET 50%+) — the bugs can be intense at dusk. Sunscreen, a sun hat, and long-sleeved clothing are essential for boat trips. Ask your guesthouse about mosquito nets before you book.
