Exploring Budapest
Hungary’s Beautiful Capital
Our adventure in Budapest began with a crisp morning full of promise. We started the day at the iconic New York Café, often called the most beautiful café in the world. Stepping inside felt like entering a grand palace of a bygone era, with its lavish chandeliers, gilded moldings, and intricate frescoes. We enjoyed aromatic Hungarian coffee paired with a slice of rich Dobos torte — a perfect start to our day.
Refuelled and energised, we headed to the majestic Buda Castle high on Castle Hill. The walk up offered stunning views over the Danube and Pest. We wandered through the historic courtyards and spent time exploring the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum within the castle complex. The blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture was captivating.
By lunchtime we made our way to the historic Café Gerbeaud. We savoured a hearty bowl of traditional Hungarian goulash, rich with tender beef and aromatic spices, served with freshly baked bread. We also sampled some excellent Hungarian wines that perfectly complemented the meal.
In the afternoon we continued exploring. We admired the grand Neo-Gothic Parliament Building along the Danube and visited the serene St. Stephen’s Basilica. Later we wandered through the vibrant streets of Pest and ended up at the famous ruin pub Szimpla Kert, where the eclectic atmosphere perfectly captured Budapest’s creative spirit.
As evening fell, we found a quiet tea house tucked away from the crowds and enjoyed a soothing herbal tea while reflecting on the day. From grand landmarks to cosy local spots, Budapest offered a wonderful mix of history, elegance, and warmth.
Budapest enchanted us with its timeless beauty, rich history, and vibrant energy. Our day was filled with unforgettable moments, and we left with a deep appreciation for this remarkable city — already planning our return.
