Byron Bay: Friends, Lighthouse Hike, Pub Lunch, and Mullumbimby Visit
Byron Bay, with its laid-back charm and stunning coastal beauty, has always been one of our favorite spots in Australia. When the opportunity came to visit again, we were eager not only to soak in the atmosphere but also to catch up with the many friends who call this unique corner of the world home.
Arriving in Byron Bay felt like stepping into a postcard. The air was warm, the sky impossibly blue, and the beaches stretched out in all their golden glory. Our first stop was to catch up with old friends who had moved to the area years ago. We gathered at a cozy beachside café, laughing and reminiscing as we sipped our drinks, the waves crashing just a stone’s throw away.
The next morning, we decided to tackle one of Byron’s most iconic landmarks: the hike to the Cape Byron Lighthouse. The trail wound its way through lush coastal rainforest, offering breathtaking views of the ocean at every turn. As we neared the top, the lighthouse came into view, standing tall and proud against the clear sky. We reached the summit just as the sun climbed higher, bathing the coast in warm, golden light. From the top, we could see dolphins playing in the waves below, a sight that made the climb even more rewarding.
After the hike, we were ready for a hearty lunch, so we headed to the famous Byron Bay Hotel, known to locals simply as “The Byron.” The pub was bustling with energy, filled with a mix of surfers, tourists, and locals. We found a spot on the patio and enjoyed classic pub fare—juicy burgers, fresh salads, and, of course, a cold beer to wash it all down. The relaxed vibe and friendly banter made it a perfect spot to unwind after our morning adventure.
Later in the afternoon, we took a side trip to Mullumbimby, a small town just a short drive from Byron Bay. Known for its quirky charm and artistic community, Mullumbimby offered a different pace from the bustling beach town. We wandered through local markets, admired handmade crafts, and chatted with friendly vendors. The town’s relaxed, bohemian vibe was a perfect contrast to Byron’s coastal energy.
As the day drew to a close, we couldn’t help but reflect on how much Byron Bay has changed over the years. The stunning landscapes and vibrant community still make it a special place, but the town has undeniably become more expensive and crowded. What was once a sleepy beach town with a laid-back vibe has transformed into a bustling tourist destination, where the charm is often overshadowed by the influx of visitors and skyrocketing prices. Even the once-quiet streets now buzz with activity, and finding a peaceful spot on the beach has become a challenge. Despite these changes, Byron Bay still holds a certain magic, but it’s clear that the town’s evolution has brought both new energy and a sense of nostalgia for what it used to be.
