Arriving in Baku, Azerbaijan, felt like stepping into a city where history and modernity danced together in a fascinating juxtaposition. Our journey began right at the gates to the Old Town, known locally as Icherisheher. The narrow, winding streets were lined with ancient stone buildings, their weathered facades telling stories of centuries past. As we explored, we were frequently approached by enthusiastic touts offering guided tours and souvenirs. Their friendly persistence was part of the charm, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the bustling marketplace.

Despite the occasional hustle, the Old Town had an undeniable allure. The labyrinthine streets led us to historical gems like the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs. Each corner seemed to reveal another layer of Baku’s rich past, seamlessly woven into the modern cityscape.

Our accommodation was a lovely apartment situated right at the gates to the Old Town. It was a serene retreat with stylish furnishings and a panoramic view of Baku’s skyline. From our balcony, we could see the contrast between the sleek, futuristic Flame Towers and the ancient buildings of the Old Town in the distance. This blend of old and new captured the essence of Baku—a city that embraces its historical roots while eagerly looking toward the future.

Each evening, we would return to the Old Town to enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, savoring traditional Azerbaijani dishes like plov and kebabs. As we dined, we marveled at how Baku seamlessly bridges the past with the present, offering an experience that is both timeless and forward-looking. This vibrant city, with its unique mix of ancient charm and modern sophistication, left an indelible mark on our travel memories.
