Our journey to Sheki, Azerbaijan, was a delightful immersion into a region steeped in history and hospitality. Nestled in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains, Sheki offered us a blend of scenic beauty, rich heritage, and warm local traditions.

Upon arrival, we were welcomed into a wonderful homestay that quickly became a highlight of our trip. Our hosts, a charming local family, greeted us with open arms and a spread of homemade delights. The table was filled with fresh bread, creamy cheese, and an array of vibrant homemade jams—each jar bursting with the flavors of local fruits. To accompany the meal, they offered us glasses of homemade vodka, a traditional spirit that added a touch of local authenticity to our experience.

One of our favorite pastimes during our stay was sipping tea in the shady park near our homestay. On hot days, the cool shade of the trees provided a perfect respite. We would sit back, enjoying the tranquil ambiance while watching local life unfold around us. The park was a peaceful haven, ideal for reflecting on our adventures and soaking in the relaxed pace of life in Sheki.

Sheki’s history is as rich as its landscape. Established along the ancient Silk Road, the city has long been a hub of trade and culture. This historic significance was evident as we explored the town’s architectural treasures. The Sheki Fortress, a majestic structure overlooking the city, provided stunning panoramic views and a glimpse into the region’s past. Built in the 18th century, the fortress was an impressive defensive stronghold and a testament to the city’s strategic importance throughout history.

Another gem we discovered was the Sheki Caravanserai, an architectural marvel that dates back to the 18th century. This ancient inn was once a bustling stop for traders and travelers journeying along the Silk Road. Walking through its arched hallways and courtyards, we could almost hear the echoes of past conversations and the clatter of merchant goods. The Caravanserai’s intricate design and historical significance made it a fascinating place to explore and imagine the stories of those who once passed through.
