Gandan to Terelj: A Long Weekend in the Mongolian Wilderness
Even with just three days in Mongolia, you can experience the best of this incredible country. This efficient itinerary combines the cultural highlights of Ulaanbaatar with the natural beauty of Terelj National Park, giving you a well-rounded taste of Mongolia’s capital and its surrounding wilderness. Perfect for stopover travellers, business visitors extending a layover, or anyone who wants to maximise a long weekend. Despite the short timeframe, you’ll leave with unforgettable memories and a longing to return. Estimated budget: $350–500.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive & Explore Ulaanbaatar
Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport. Drop your bags at your hotel and head straight to Gandan Monastery, Mongolia’s most important Buddhist monastery. Watch the monks’ afternoon chanting session — a deeply moving experience. Walk south to Sukhbaatar Square, dominated by the massive Chinggis Khaan statue. In the late afternoon, take a taxi up to the Zaisan Memorial for panoramic sunset views of the entire city and surrounding mountains.
Accommodation: Ulaanbaatar city centre hotel or guesthouse ($20–50/night).
Meals: Try traditional Mongolian buuz (steamed dumplings) at a local restaurant ($5–10).
Day 2: Terelj National Park Day Trip
Full day adventure in Terelj National Park, just 70 km east of Ulaanbaatar. Your driver will pick you up around 8 AM. Start at Turtle Rock, the iconic tortoise-shaped granite formation. Then hike up to the Aryabal Meditation Temple for breathtaking valley views. Enjoy a traditional Mongolian lunch at a ger camp — try the tsuivan (fried noodles with meat). In the afternoon, go horseback riding through alpine meadows and along the Tuul River. Return to UB by early evening.
Transport: Private car or tour ($30–50/person all-inclusive).
Activities: Ger lunch ($8–12), horse riding ($15–20/hr).
Day 3: Final Morning & Departure
Depending on your flight time, use your final morning wisely. Visit the Bogd Khaan Winter Palace — the former residence of Mongolia’s last king, featuring a fascinating collection of royal artefacts. Then head to the Choijin Lama Temple Museum, a beautifully preserved Buddhist temple complex that survived the Stalinist purges of the 1930s. If time allows, make a quick stop at the Black Market (Narantuul) for souvenirs — cashmere scarves, felt slippers, and Mongolian vodka make great gifts. Head to the airport for your departure.
Entry Fees: Bogd Khaan Palace ($3), Choijin Lama Temple ($3).
