CRITICAL BORDER WARNING – March 2026
Azerbaijan’s land borders remain closed for entry for most civilians until at least July 1, 2026. However, exit from Azerbaijan is generally allowed at Balakan/Lagodekhi for foreigners. You can leave Azerbaijan to Georgia, but you cannot enter Azerbaijan by land. Always double-check the latest rules with official sources before departure.
1. Preparation & Requirements
The Balakan/Lagodekhi border is fully pedestrian-only. No private cars or taxis can cross. It operates 24/7, but morning crossings are much smoother with fewer queues and better onward transport connections.
Visa & Entry Rules (2026)
Exiting Azerbaijan is straightforward for most travellers. Entering Georgia is visa-free for over 98 nationalities for up to 1 year. There are currently no COVID restrictions on either side. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned stay in Georgia.
Passport & Documents: Valid passport + photocopies. Georgia occasionally asks for proof of onward travel or sufficient funds.
Travel Insurance: Mandatory for Georgia — buy at the border (≈10 GEL for 30 days). Get comprehensive coverage including medical and trip cancellation.
Currency: Bring plenty of AZN and GEL cash. No reliable ATMs at the border. Exchange rates at the border are poor.
Customs Rules: Declare expensive items (drones, cameras, laptops). Armenian stamps or products in your passport/bag can cause delays or questions.
Apps & Offline Tools: Download Google Translate (Georgian & Azerbaijani), Bolt/Yandex Go for Georgia, and Maps.me for offline navigation.
Health & Safety: Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and any personal medications. The neutral zone has limited shade.
This crossing offers some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the entire Caucasus region — many travellers say it’s worth the effort just for the views.
Start your journey early (before 9 AM) to avoid afternoon crowds and to reach Telavi before dark. Pack light — you will walk 700+ metres with stairs and possible waits.
2. From Sheki to Balakan (Azerbaijan Side)
Distance: approximately 110 km. The road is scenic, winding through foothills with stunning views of the Greater Caucasus mountains. The journey usually takes 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic and stops.
Best Transport Options
Marshrutka / Minibus: Most popular and cheapest option. Departs from Sheki Central Bus Station roughly every 1–2 hours (8:00, 10:10, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00). Cost: 5–7 AZN.
Private Taxi: Comfortable and door-to-border service. 40–60 AZN for 1–1.5 hours. Negotiate price in advance.
Train: Newer option — early morning train from Sheki to Balakan (around 4 AZN). Check current schedule as it changes seasonally.
From Balakan town centre, take a local taxi to the actual border post (5–10 AZN, 10 minutes). Drivers know the route well.
The road from Sheki to Balakan passes through beautiful villages and offers dramatic views of snow-capped peaks even in summer.
Sit on the right side of the vehicle for the best mountain views. Bring water and snacks. Avoid travelling late in the afternoon if you want same-day connections in Georgia.
3. Crossing Balakan/Lagodekhi Border
This is a pedestrian-only border. Expect a 700-metre walk (some uphill sections and stairs) through the neutral zone. Total time is usually 20–40 minutes but can be longer on busy weekends or holidays.
Step-by-Step Process
1. Azerbaijan exit control — passport stamp out.
2. Walk across the neutral zone (beautiful mountain scenery — great photo opportunity).
3. Georgia entry control — passport check + buy insurance if needed.
Processing Time: 20–40 minutes normally, longer on weekends.
Insurance: Purchase on the Georgian side (10 GEL for 30 days).
Luggage: X-ray scan on Georgia side. Be ready to open bags.
Weather: Can be very hot in summer or rainy — no shade in parts of the neutral zone.
Money Exchange: Rates are poor — better to exchange in Lagodekhi town.
The bridge in the neutral zone offers incredible panoramic mountain views — one of the most photogenic border crossings in the region.
Travel as light as possible. Bring a reusable water bottle. Try to cross before 3 PM to ensure you can reach Telavi comfortably before evening.
4. From Lagodekhi Border to Telavi
Distance: 80 km through the beautiful Kakheti wine region. The drive takes 1.5–2 hours and passes vineyards, churches, and rolling hills.
Transport Options on Georgian Side
Shared Taxi: Fastest and most convenient. 15–25 GEL per person when shared. Plenty available right at the border.
Direct Taxi: 50–70 GEL for private ride. Negotiate firmly.
Marshrutka: Cheaper (10 GEL). Departs from Lagodekhi centre several times daily (last ones around 4 PM).
Bolt / Yandex: Works well in Lagodekhi and often cheaper than taxis.
You’ll drive through Georgia’s most famous wine-producing region — Kakheti. Look out for qvevri wine cellars along the way.
Share a taxi with other travellers — it’s common and saves money. Tell drivers “Telavi avtostantsia” (central bus station).
5. Arrival in Telavi & Next Steps
Congratulations — you’ve arrived in the heart of Kakheti, Georgia’s premier wine region! Telavi is a charming town with a relaxed atmosphere, historic sites, and excellent food and wine.
First Things To Do in Telavi
Accommodation: Budget guesthouses 30–40 GEL, nicer hotels like Hotel Tela around 50 GEL. Many family-run options with great hospitality.
Wine Tasting: Highly recommended — visits to Tsinandali, Kindzmarauli, or local qvevri cellars (20–50 GEL per tasting).
Onward Travel: Frequent marshrutkas to Tbilisi (8 GEL, 2 hours). Many run hourly.
Practical: ATMs everywhere (TBC Bank best rates). Buy a local SIM (Magti or Beeline) at the station for 10 GEL with data.
The name “Telavi” comes from the old Georgian word for “tree” — the town is surrounded by ancient forests and vineyards that have produced wine for thousands of years.
Try local specialties: churchkhela (sweet walnut sausage), khinkali, and fresh Kakheti wine. Visit Batonis Tsikhe castle (only 5 GEL) for beautiful views over the Alazani Valley.
