How To Get From Baku To Sheki A Vagabond Life
Baku To Sheki By Bus Or Mini Van
Getting from Baku to Sheki is relatively straight forward and starts at the the Baku Bus Terminal which is a chaotic mass of people, traders and buses leaving for destinations all over Azerbaijan and beyond.
There are two different types of bus that run to Sheki.
Coach: A coach that travels the main highways stopping for lunch along the way. Tickets cost 8.40 AZN. There are frequent coaches daily with the current timetable leaving Baku at:
- 9 am
- 11 am
- 12:20 pm
- 2 pm
- 4:30 pm
- 5:30 pm
Mini-Van: A mini-van which takes a more direct route through the mountains. A quicker option but perhaps not for those who suffer travel sickness.
While the coach is slower the bonus of getting to Sheki this way is that is is not packed to the gills as the minivans are and there is somewhere for your luggage. Both the coach and min-van arrive into the Sheki Bus Terminal which is in a central location. From there you can catch a local bus or taxi to your guest house.
The Baku Bus Terminal is on the top floor of a shopping centre. To get there catch the excellent Baku Metro to the Avtovaghzal. Once off the train follow the underground signs to the Baku Bus Terminal (Shopping Centre
Baku to Sheki By Train
The Baku to Sheki train is an overnight train currently departing Baku at 11.20pm and arriving at Sheki at 7:30am the next day. The train station is an inconvenient 17km out of Sheki.
There are three different types of seating
- Dorm Style Carriages – 7.65AZN
- Four Birth Bunk Cabins – 12.70AZN
- Two Birth Sleepers – 20.50AZN
Tickets can be purchased at the Central railway station or online at Azerbaijan Railways up to 10 days before departure.
Baku to Sheki By Taxi
This is a good option if you either want to get to Sheki quickly or you would like to be able to stop and see a few sights on the way.
Taxis depart from just outside the Baku International Bus Station (as above) and cost about 20AZN per person for a shared Taxi and about 80 – 100AZN for a taxi for yourself.
If you don’t want to get from Baku to Sheki quickly or the bus and train timetables don’t suit your itinerary, then there is the option to take a shared taxi.
