Our exploration of the Saxon villages in Romania, based in the historic town of Sighişoara, was a captivating journey through time. Nestled in the heart of Transylvania, Sighişoara served as the perfect base for discovering the charming nearby Saxon villages, each rich in history and architectural splendor.

The Saxon villages of Romania, settled by German-speaking Saxons during the 12th century, are renowned for their well-preserved medieval architecture and fortified churches. These villages were originally established as defensive outposts against potential invasions, and their architecture reflects this strategic purpose. The sturdy stone walls and tall, fortified towers of the churches stand as testaments to the Saxons’ practical approach to town planning and defense.

Our day began with a drive through rolling hills and lush landscapes to one of the most picturesque Saxon villages: Viscri. Known for its traditional charm, Viscri is a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its fortified church and vibrant, colorful houses. The village’s architecture, with its characteristic whitewashed walls and red-tiled roofs, offers a glimpse into the Saxon way of life from centuries ago.

We continued our journey to Biertan, another notable Saxon village. Here, we visited the impressive Biertan Fortified Church, a masterpiece of medieval defensive architecture. The church, surrounded by a fortified wall and multiple towers, provided a fascinating insight into the region’s historical fortifications. Walking through the narrow streets of Biertan, we marveled at the well-preserved homes and traditional craftsmanship.

Around midday, we stopped for a delicious local lunch at a cozy eatery in one of the villages. The meal was a delightful experience, featuring traditional Romanian dishes such as hearty goulash and freshly baked bread. We also enjoyed “sarmale,” cabbage rolls stuffed with a savory mix of meat and rice, which was a comforting and flavorful addition to our meal. The friendly atmosphere and home-cooked flavors provided a perfect break from our sightseeing.

Our afternoon continued with visits to other Saxon villages, each with its own unique charm and historical significance. The well-maintained architecture and scenic beauty of these villages offered a serene and immersive travel experience, allowing us to appreciate the Saxon legacy and the rich cultural tapestry of Transylvania.

Returning to Sighişoara in the evening, we reflected on our journey through the Saxon villages. The blend of historical intrigue, architectural marvels, and delicious local cuisine made for an unforgettable exploration, highlighting the enduring appeal of Romania’s Saxon heritage.
