Stories from Sofia Bulgaria

Traveling to Sofia, Bulgaria, for three weeks was an unforgettable experience filled with cultural discoveries, culinary delights, and scenic beauty. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the city’s blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy.

We were fortunate to find a wonderful apartment close to the National Opera and Ballet. Its central location made it easy to explore the city on foot. The apartment itself was cozy and well-equipped, with large windows that offered a stunning view of the iconic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, especially beautiful when illuminated at night.

Our days were filled with sightseeing and immersing ourselves in the local culture. We started with a visit to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, a symbol of Sofia with its striking gold-domed roof and intricate frescoes. The serenity inside was a stark contrast to the bustling streets outside, providing a peaceful place for reflection.

Another highlight was the ancient Serdica archaeological complex. Walking through the remnants of Roman streets and buildings beneath the modern city was like stepping back in time. We also marveled at the Rotunda of St. George, one of Sofia’s oldest buildings, with its well-preserved frescoes that date back to the medieval period.

We spent many afternoons in the lush Borisova Gradina Park, Sofia’s oldest and most beautiful park. It was the perfect place to relax, have a picnic, and watch locals go about their day. The park’s well-manicured gardens, serene lakes, and shaded pathways provided a refreshing escape from the urban hustle.

The evenings were an adventure of their own as we explored Sofia’s culinary scene. Surprisingly, we found an incredible Thai restaurant tucked away in a quiet street. The authentic flavors of the dishes transported us straight to Southeast Asia, with spicy curries and tangy pad thai that rivaled those we’d tasted in Bangkok.

Equally impressive was the Japanese restaurant we discovered near our apartment. The sushi was fresh and expertly prepared, while the ramen was rich and comforting. It became our go-to spot for dinner, and the friendly staff made us feel right at home.

During our stay, we also attended a performance at the National Opera and Ballet. The grandiose interior and the incredible talent of the performers made for a mesmerizing evening. It was a highlight of our trip and showcased the rich cultural heritage of Sofia.

Our three weeks in Sofia flew by, but they left us with lasting memories of a city that gracefully bridges its historic past with its dynamic present. From ancient ruins and majestic cathedrals to serene parks and delightful dining experiences, Sofia proved to be a treasure trove of experiences that we’ll cherish forever.
