Our two-week adventure in Belgrade was a captivating blend of history, culture, and culinary delights. Staying in a well-appointed apartment in the heart of the city, we enjoyed a comfortable and convenient base from which to explore Serbia’s vibrant capital.

Belgrade’s summer heat was intense, but it only added to the city’s lively energy. We began our explorations at Kalemegdan Fortress, a historic citadel overlooking the confluence of the River Sava and Danube. Wandering through its ancient walls, we marveled at the panoramic views of the rivers and the city’s sprawling landscape. The fortress is not just a historical landmark but a vibrant park where locals and tourists alike gather to enjoy the green space and historical ruins.

We visited the iconic Church of Saint Sava, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. Its impressive architecture and serene interior provided a peaceful escape from the bustling city. The church’s grand dome and intricately designed frescoes were truly awe-inspiring.

One of the more somber yet significant sites we explored was the building bombed by NATO in 1999. The bombed remains of the Serbian Ministry of Defense serve as a powerful reminder of the city’s recent past. Standing before the damaged structure, we reflected on the complex history of the region and the resilience of its people.

Our culinary journey through Belgrade was equally memorable. We dined at local restaurants where we sampled a variety of Serbian specialties. From the hearty “ćevapi” (grilled minced meat) to “sarma” (cabbage rolls stuffed with meat and rice), each meal was a delightful immersion into Serbian flavors. The rich, savory dishes were often accompanied by refreshing local wines and lively conversations with friendly locals.

In addition to these highlights, we explored the vibrant neighborhoods of Belgrade. Skadarlija, the bohemian quarter, offered charming cobblestone streets lined with traditional restaurants and lively music. The area’s old-world charm and artistic atmosphere made it a favorite spot for evening strolls and dinner.

We also visited the Museum of Yugoslavia, where we learned about the country’s complex history through its extensive exhibits. The museum provided insightful context to the historical sites we had visited and deepened our understanding of the region’s past.

Our two weeks in Belgrade were filled with rich experiences, from historical explorations and culinary adventures to immersing ourselves in the city’s vibrant culture. Despite the intense summer heat, Belgrade’s warmth and hospitality made our stay unforgettable. Each day offered new discoveries and a deeper appreciation for the city’s unique heritage and lively spirit.
