Uxmal Travel Guide
Uxmal is one of the most beautiful and elegant ancient Maya cities in Mexico. Located in the Puuc region of Yucatán, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its intricate stone mosaics, dramatic architecture, and mystical atmosphere.
Uxmal is an excellent alternative to Chichén Itzá, especially if you’re coming from Mérida. It is significantly less crowded, feels more intimate, and showcases the refined Puuc architectural style at its finest.
A Brief History of Uxmal
Uxmal was founded around 500 CE and reached its peak between 700–1000 CE. Unlike many other Maya cities, it was built in the Puuc style, characterized by richly decorated façades with geometric patterns, masks of the rain god Chaac, and serpents.
The city was closely aligned with astronomy — many buildings are oriented to the movements of Venus and the sun. Uxmal was abandoned around the 10th–11th century, though it continued to be revered and visited by Maya people for centuries afterward.
