A Lantern-Lit Love Affair with Hoi An

Why this ancient town completely stole our hearts

Our time in Hoi An felt like stepping into a storybook. From the moment we arrived, the town wrapped us in its golden glow and gentle rhythm. We had heard the stories — the lanterns, the tailors, the food — but nothing quite prepared us for how deeply this place would charm us.

The Old Town was pure magic. Every evening, thousands of silk lanterns lit up the streets, turning the ancient merchant houses and riverfront into something almost dreamlike. We spent hours wandering the narrow alleys, crossing the famous Japanese Covered Bridge, and simply soaking in the atmosphere. The town felt alive but never overwhelming — peaceful in a way that many tourist places aren’t.

One of our favourite experiences was joining a cooking class. We started the morning at the bustling market with our chef, picking out fresh herbs, vegetables, and seafood. Back at the school, we learned to make phở, crispy bánh xèo, and the famous cao lầu — a dish unique to Hoi An. Cooking together, laughing at our clumsy attempts, and then eating what we made remains one of the most joyful memories of our trip.

Then there were the tailors. Hoi An is famous for them, and we couldn’t resist. We spent a whole afternoon choosing fabrics and styles, getting measured, and dreaming up new clothes. A few days later, we returned for fittings and left with perfectly tailored pieces at prices that still make us smile. The craftsmanship and attention to detail were genuinely impressive.

We also rented bicycles and rode out to the rice paddies and An Bang Beach. The ride itself was beautiful — passing through quiet villages, over small bridges, and alongside emerald-green fields. At the beach, we spent lazy afternoons swimming in the warm sea and eating fresh seafood at simple beachside restaurants. It felt like the perfect balance between culture and relaxation.

As our time in Hoi An came to an end, we realized how special this town truly is. It’s not just beautiful — it’s warm, creative, delicious, and somehow manages to feel both timeless and alive. The glowing lanterns, the laughter in cooking classes, the smell of fresh bánh mì in the morning, and the gentle flow of the Thu Bon River all left a deep impression on us.

Hoi An didn’t just give us beautiful photos. It gave us a feeling — one we’ll carry with us for a very long time.
