Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival, City Walls & Muslim Quarter
☀️ Afternoon — Ancient City WallsAfter arrival and check-in, head to the Xi’an City Walls. Hire a bicycle and ride the full 14 km circuit (or walk a section). The walls are among the best-preserved in China and offer excellent views over the old city and the modern skyline beyond. Allow 2–3 hours.
🌆 Evening — Muslim QuarterAs evening falls, dive into the Muslim Quarter (Hui Min Jie). This lively neighbourhood is packed with street food stalls, mosques and a completely different atmosphere from the rest of the city. Try rou jia mo, yang rou pao mo, grilled skewers, persimmon cakes and freshly pulled noodles.
Day 2: Terracotta Warriors & Huaqing Palace
☀️ Full Morning & Afternoon — Terracotta ArmyDedicate the day to the Terracotta Warriors (Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum). Arrive as early as possible. Visit Pits 1, 2 and 3 in order — Pit 1 is the most impressive with its ranks of life-sized soldiers. Allow 3–4 hours inside the complex. The scale and detail are extraordinary.
On the return journey, stop at Huaqing Palace / Huaqing Hot Springs, a historic imperial retreat with Tang-dynasty associations and pleasant gardens.
Day 3: Big Wild Goose Pagoda, History Museum & Tang Culture
☀️ Morning — Big Wild Goose PagodaVisit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, a Tang-dynasty landmark linked to the monk Xuanzang and his journey to India. Climb the pagoda if open and walk the surrounding grounds and fountain plaza.
🌆 Afternoon — Shaanxi History MuseumContinue to the Shaanxi History Museum (free timed tickets, book ahead). It houses an outstanding collection of artefacts spanning thousands of years and gives excellent context to everything you see in Xi’an. Afterwards, explore the Qujiang area or return toward the city walls.
Day 4: Deeper Xi’an – Mosques, Markets & Optional Day Trip
☀️ Morning — Great Mosque & Muslim Quarter RevisitedVisit the Great Mosque of Xi’an (one of the oldest and most atmospheric in China) and continue exploring the surrounding lanes and markets at a slower pace. This is one of the most distinctive neighbourhoods in the country.
🌆 Afternoon — Free ChoiceOptions include: climbing a different section of the city walls, visiting the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, shopping for souvenirs, or taking a half-day trip to the Hanyangling Museum (Tomb of Emperor Jingdi) for a quieter, beautifully presented underground experience.
Day 5: Final Walls, Markets & Departure
☀️ Morning — Last WalksUse the morning for any remaining sights: another stretch of the city walls at a quieter time, a final circuit of the Bell and Drum Towers area, or souvenir shopping. Xi’an’s markets and small shops offer everything from replica warriors to local snacks.
🌆 Afternoon — DepartureTransfer to the airport or high-speed rail station for your onward journey.
