Our Journey to Sheki, Azerbaijan

Our Journey to Sheki, Azerbaijan

A story of mountains, history, and heartfelt hospitality

Our journey to Sheki, Azerbaijan was a delightful immersion into a region steeped in history and warm hospitality. Nestled in the lush foothills of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, Sheki welcomed us with scenic beauty, rich heritage, and the gentle rhythm of mountain life.

From the moment we arrived, we were embraced by a wonderful homestay run by a charming local family. They greeted us with open arms and a table overflowing with homemade treasures — fresh bread straight from the oven, creamy cheese, and an array of vibrant jams made from local fruits. To complete the welcome, they poured us glasses of their own homemade vodka, adding a true taste of Azerbaijani tradition to our first evening.

One of our favorite daily rituals quickly became sipping tea in the shady park just steps from our homestay. Under the cool canopy of old trees, we would sit for hours on hot days, watching local life unfold around us. It was the perfect place to slow down, reflect, and simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere that makes Sheki so special.

Sheki’s deep connection to the ancient Silk Road is palpable everywhere. As we explored the town, we felt transported back in time. The majestic Sheki Fortress, built in the 18th century, stands proudly overlooking the city. Climbing its walls offered us breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and a powerful sense of the region’s historic importance.

Equally enchanting was the magnificent Sheki Caravanserai. This 18th-century inn once served as a vital stop for traders and travelers along the Silk Road. Walking through its grand arched courtyards and hallways, we could almost hear the echoes of caravans, merchants bargaining, and stories being shared under the same roof centuries ago.

Our days in Sheki became a beautiful blend of history, culture, and genuine human connection. From the warmth of our hosts and the flavors of homemade meals, to peaceful moments in the park and explorations of timeless landmarks — every part of the journey felt truly magical.

Sheki left a lasting impression on our hearts with its unique charm, rich heritage, and incredibly welcoming spirit.
